Water leak

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 2006 1.8lt diesel focus. I was about to go out today and noticed a wet patch on the drive. Upon closer inspection its losing water from somewhere at the back of the engine. Its dripping off the bottom of the engine where the clutch is attached, but its coming from above that point. Does anyone know if there are water pipes in that area that could be leaking or is the head gasket at fault. Car starts and drives normally.

Air conditioning condensate.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Are you able to elaborate further?

The car is new to me so I don't know much about it.

The water is pink, same as the coolant, if that's any help?

Hi Taz, are you 100% sure the water is 'pink' and not just mucky or brownish ?

If it is pink then you are correct to assume that it is coolant, but if the level in the plastic tank is staying at its normal level then that would be very odd.

Given the location of where you say the water is coming from it is more likely just the condensate from the air conditioning system which is totally normal (all cars with A/C do it, just some more than others).

Keep a close watch on the level of coolant in the tank (maybe draw a pencil line on the tank when it is cold) and see if the coolant drops over a few days. I still feel it is probably just water from the A/C system but after a few days you should know the answer.

I know this isn’t your problem if your leak is behind engine but it’s worth knowing this as you have a 1.8tdci. On my brothers 2008 1.8tdci it had a major water leak. The black plastic thermostat cover on front of engine seemed to have come apart. It seems to be two parts glued or melted together and they just parted company. Dead cheap part on eBay but inconvenient problem. Another problem was leaking oil from the riveted part of the vacuum pump next to the thermostat. This was a lovely car when it was working but everything just seemed to go wrong.
