EcoBoost 1.0 engine sound noisy and harsh

Featured Replies

I have just bought a 2019 Focus EcoBoost 1.0 with a manual transmission, full service history 17,500 miles. Compared with my previous Focus Zetec the engine sound noisy and harsh when just pulling away in first or accelerating hard in most gears. The Ford garage said it was normal as the engine only has 3 cylinders, a turbo charger and chain driven cam shaft.

Do any other members own this model and have thought it to be a noisy engine?

Thanks.

Can you post a video? It's complete guesswork otherwise. I'd imagine it's normal though...

Not tried it in a Focus, but the 1.0 MHEV (chain drive) in the Puma I test drove a while back seemed quite "growly" (particularly at lower speeds) compared to the wet belt version in my Fiesta, so it could just be a normal characteristic. I wouldn't say I found it especially unpleasant, though, just different.

Normal. I commented on it when the engine came out some time ago in the focus.

If you go for a later model they don't even fit an engine cover any more...sounds awful in the cabin.  My old diesel Golf is quieter...with the windows up anyway!
