Catastrophic engine failure!

Featured Replies

My 2016 Focus 1.0 l Ecoboost car has had total engine failure with only 87,000 on the clock! Is this a timing belt fault if so what are the timing belt changing intervals! Many thanks Mick

Well provided that your car has been fully serviced by a Ford Main Dealer at every service interval as layed down by Ford then the timing belt should be replaced every 150,000 Miles or 10 years from date of registration, which ever comes first.

If your timing belt has snapped then your engine has just be converted to a block of scarp metal with no hope of it being repaired.

Yep that's what i thought! Idon't suppose you would have an idea how a new one fitted would be by any chance? Many thanks

It would be probably not cost effective to fit a new engine.

Brand new from Ford I believe is just under£5000 + Ford dealer to fit about another £2000 = about £7000 but you will get a guarantee 👍

Buy a secondhand engine from a Vehicle Recycle centre (scrap yard) and you can get a good one for £1500 - £2000. Use a small independant garage to do the engine swap for about £1000 = under £3000 no guarantee.

Maybe factor in a tad more to have a new timing belt put on the replacement engine?

If the history of it is known that may help but going off your recent experience it’d be better to play safe

Hi Unofix, pretty much what thought! Thanks for all the advice!

Fair point !!

Much easier and a lot cheaper to do it when the engine is out.

Not necessarily, "catastrophic engine failure" can be caused by more than the timing belt failing.

Indeed, my Focus prior to purchase suffered 'hydro lock' stuffing the original engine. Now fitted with a super clean engine (new timing belt, new clutch, new plugs etc etc.)

Surely you could have just used a drop of gorilla glue ? 🤣

No mission - have you seen the price of that stuff? LOL

I had my engine replaced at 67k on the clock. Oil pump failure and engine seized.

luckily my car was just under the 3rd month warranty well more like at the end of it.

Anyway the total cost I was told was £3500 for new engine and the fitting of it.

Thats an excellent price, which Ford dealer was that with as there are many on this forum that would probably get a quote from them ?
