Oil and filters

Featured Replies

Hello,

These days I have to change engine oil and filters. I have Focus 1.6 TDCI mk3. Im going to get Ford Formula F 5W30 for engine oil but what do you think about it and is there something better(Castrol?) for this price? For air filter, polen filter and oil filter im probably going to get Mahle. What can you recommend me about fuel filter? Fuel quality in my country is poor... Thanks!

I'd never have thought about Arnold Clark for buying oil, good shout Unofix,

Euro car parts not great but Carparts4less (even although same company) quite good.

Shell Helix fully synthetic as an alternative to the Castrol same price - its 20% off flash sale brings it down to £34.71 for 5.lyrs.

Some brands do a 4.5 ltr, look cheaper until you compare like for like.

Shell Helix 5W-20 Ultra Professional AF Ford Ecoboost - 5Ltr
£43.39
Unit price  £43.39

In my 1.5tdci and previous 1.6tdci I always use Castrol magnetec . Usually bought from supermarkets Asda/ Tesco when on special offer. I always have one spare bought when cheap in case it’s not on offer when I need to change oil. 4 litre is standard size. That is enough for oil change including filter change in fiesta.  I assume sump is same size in focus.

I always buy genuine Ford filter but I think the actual filter plastic moulding says Mahle on it.  I have not yet been able to change filter without getting oil down side of engine as not easy to get out on fiesta. Maybe more room on focus.

When I said 4 litre is standard size for Magnetec, that is in uk. Maybe different in other countries.

Actually the standard size is 5 litre from Ford dealers, its only 4 litre from supermarkets and motorist discount stores.

Many Ford engines take 4.8 litres of oil if you also change the filter, but I guess the new generation of toy engines probably take just over an egg cup full 🤣

You are wrong regarding the "toy engines". The 1.0 ECOboost has an oil capacity of 5,05 Liters which is more than most Ford engines.

Opps !! my mistake. I stupidly just assumed thet the modern little 1.0 engines would only take a small amout of oil, I should have checked that first. 🤔

1.6 TDCI only takes about 3.5 litres after a change.  Official capacity is 3.8l iirc.  I've used various oils in them, Mobil 1, Ford Castrol, Ford Formula F etc, even Shell Helix...  Can't say I noticed any real world difference.  Ideally you want something low SAPS to keep the DPF in better condition.

Mahle are generally the brand of oil filters that are put in the Ford boxes so you won't have any problems there.

I've always bought the genuine fuel filters...not a fan of budget filters on a modern diesel as injectors are so expensive if they get wrecked.
