Focus 2009 1.6TDCI DuraTorq Timing belt replacement

Featured Replies

Could someone give me advice (apart from don't do it) on how to replace a timing belt on a Focus 2009 1.6TDCI DuraTorq engine (the one with the sensor on the crankshaft wheel). Looked up the tutorials and couldn't find anything. I have some mechanical knowledge.

You need to make sure to lock everything solid, the slightest of movement of the camshaft or crankshaft once you remove the old belt could screw up your engine or worse it could even kill it.

One last bit of advice - Don't do it !

I’m not going to say do or don’t.  Based on my experience of doing it on my previous 2007 1.6tdci fiesta I would say it was a bit harder than a 1980s petrol escort cvh engine but much much much easier than a petrol focus of say 15 years ago. The main plus points was a hole at the back of flywheel to shove a bolt into to lock it whilst undoing crank pulley bolt and also having a woodruff key where the crank pulley goes on end of crankshaft. Main problem was not a lot of space to work on getting belt tensioner right(hard to stop tension changing when doing bolt up) . Might be more space on focus. I’m not going to say things like it is easy and you can’t go wrong as I don’t know what work you have successfully done before and what your abilities are.

I would also add that I did not need any special tools (a selection of different size drill bits for holding pulleys in place ) and did not need to remove rocker cover (which you do on the old petrol engine). You do need to remove engine mount near camshaft pulley so you will need to support engine underneath at that end eg. Trolley jack.

Thanks For all your help, but i think I will leave it with someone who has experience. I got the pins for it (four in total) and have read up on it and there is a lot to do and you don't have a lot of room and the tensioner timing marks look like to be positioned at the narrowest place.

Thanks

I made a sort of guide thread on it back in 2017.  It's probably lost to the mists of time now.

Tbh it's probably best just to let a garage do it...as long as you trust them!

I managed to download the QR code from the back of a SKF timing belt kit which gives me all the details, it just looks complicated. I should put it on the download section, it might be useful to someone.

Seemingly this is a Peugeot engine that was fitted to BMW, Mazda, Suzuki, Volvo and Ford.

I think you have made a very sensible decsion, getting it wrong is very easy and could cost you the engine.
