Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost 1st / 2nd Gear problems

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Thanks in advance and sorry if there is a thread about this.

Our son has a Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost 2012 plate with 57,000 miles.

Recently we have struggled to sometimes get it into gear, when coming down the gears. 1st and 2nd gears.
Having to stop the car and turn it off.

We’ve read it could be the synchros ?

Could it be the clutch cable, but other gears were okay ?

Any idea on the costs for this ?

We’re not sure what to do, and didn’t want a big expense happening.

Appreciate the advice. Thank you !

I don’t know the answer, I can tell you there is no clutch cable, it is hydraulic clutch. It does have gear change cables, one cable for moving gear lever backwards/forwards, one cable for sideways movement. I suppose the sideways cable could possibly cause this problem

On the IB5 gearbox that this car has worn synchromesh rings of the 1st and 2nd gear are usually caused by the high torque of the 1.0 ECOboost.

On this engine/gearbox combination excessive gearbox wear caused by the high engine torque is quite common.

There is indeed, but don't worry about not being able to find it, the search facility on here is not the best. Unfortunately as you will see this issue is quite common as Wilco says.

Sorry to revive a dead topic from 2021...... However, it appears my almost 10 year old Ford Fiesta Zetec S Red Edition (140PS) is encountering this problem?

Link to my recent topic, before I found this topic:

Surprisingly enough, the mileage of my car is 73,000 and I am the only owner (1 owner). This 1st to 2nd gear clunk started happening a 2-3 weeks ago but when it first started happening, I thought it was just me doing a poor gear change and releasing the clutch too early. If I drive around 15mph in 1st gear and then change to 2nd and release the clutch very slowly, that seems to keep the clunck away or I can't hear it/feel the vibration.

If I don't have this problem fixed, what will/could happen eventually?

Should I cut my losses and sell the car now before things start to get worse?
