Front Brakes stuck on focus 2009 1.6 diesel

Hi the brakes on front have been serviced but drivers side brake stuck on and other side getting stuck too other half took apart to release but as soon as touch brake drivers side sticks. Flexies ok and new disc pads recently and calliper all free anyone got any other suggestions for cause.

Update — other half has just discovered if you pump pedal it releases brakes. But when he stand on brake again it locks up



If it is only one Brake out of the four then it is extremely likely that the piston or sliders on that calliper are sticking.

In a situation like that I would normally thoroughly clean and lubricate the sliders, and with the pads removed I would very carefully press the brake pedal to extend the piston a bit further than normal then clamp the hose, open the bleed nipple and press the piston fully in to lubricate it and check that it does not need excess resistance. Be careful that you do not press too much or the piston will come right out.

Your last sentence suggest a possible fault with the Servo, but that would make all the brakes stick, not just one. 

I don't think the Master Cylinder could be at fault, but I could be wrong.

Hi Tiger. Thanks for info. Other half will jack up car and see if all are locking up. He thinks it could be ABS pump possibly. Will post ASAP with update

It could be but diagnosing an ABS fault is bit generally not a diy proposition unless there are fault codes.

FORScan does have some ABS Service Procedures for later cars but I don't remember seeing them for a Mk 2.5 Focus.

ABS service bleed (which actuates the ABS valves) was done in 2018.

If the sticking brake caliper, caliper bracket & pads are working well, and it is specific to one wheel, then it pretty much has to be in the ABS. But check the caliper bracket for bad wear notches. The pads have to slide on that, and it does wear at the points of pad contact.

Hi all. Jacked up car and both fronts sticking on and only one back one jamming on but by pumping pedal it releases some. Any ideas appreciated

Thinking more on the ABS, if it jams with the engine stopped and ignition off, then it is less likely to be that. I would expect the power off state of an ABS to be open to all wheels, as that is the fail safe state.

Try cracking the bleed nipples. If there is hydraulic pressure pushing the brakes on due to faulty master cylinder or servo, fluid should come out and release all the brakes.

It is normal to feel a bit of resistance when just turning a wheel by hand after applying the brakes, there is nothing to push the pads fully clear of the disk. When the car is running, vibration & movement between caliper and disk should push the pads out just enough to run free. But if the wheel stays too well locked to move, or needs both hands to turn it, then it is jamming.

If front bakes jam on without hydraulic pressure (bleed nipple open), then it has to be mechanical sticking; Piston, Caliper pins or Pads on caliper bracket.

The back is more complex with the handbrake. This can over-adjust, and jam. Winding back the piston should cure this, and if it re-occurs then the caliper is faulty. There is a valve inside it which is intended to prevent over-adjustment.

Does anyone know where the abs pump module is please. Think we have eliminated the master cylinder 

I think it’s between the bulkhead and battery box or maybe slightly lower down, that’s where it was on my brothers 2008 focus 1.8tdci
