Hi I have a 2010 focus that stopped on the road, fuel filter was dry and I was told it was the high pressure pump.I just spent a full day changing this and the car is still the same way no start (I also changed the filter) but the filter is still dry-empty.Any ideas before I go crazy.

Have you tried priming the filter? If easy accessable take it out and soak in diesel or take off the inlet pipe and inject some in there. May not look the same but when I had that problem I took off the below pipe and injected some in the hole.

I changed filter on a 1.6tdci and spent nearly day getting the engine running afterwards. The high pressure pump needs to suck fuel up all the way from the tank. It can’t do it if there is air in there.      And also if you get any leak on the fuel pipe between the pump and tank, the fuel runs back to the tank and sucks air in.  The leak is then hard to find as no fuel comes out the leak, it lets air in instead. I mention this 2nd bit in case a leak was the original problem and not the pump.

What engine do you have?

What fault light did you get ? Have you used forscan to read the DTC's ?

If it was the high pressure fuel pump, and you have replaced it then the filter and fuel lines will all need to be primed before the car will start.

Knowing what engine it is would be a good start!
