Focus MK2.5 Bonnet Lock

Featured Replies

So I was fitting my ST front and rear bumpers the other day, everything seemed to go fine but then I got the dreaded bonnet lock issue.

I have managed to get it open using a guide off here, luckily I did not have to pull the upper grill off, just used a screw driver to push the plastic back into place then turned the key as normal.

So I am looking for a replacement mechanism and there seems to be a couple of variations, just wondering if they are both interchangeable and which is the best type to go for?

Also am I correct in thinking that the lock is easy to change over with just 2 or 3 pins to take out the old mechanism?

It's the first one you need the long type. It's very simple just remove the catch then it pulls out. Makes it handy having a spare key for the bonnet as you can open it whilst the car is running 😁

I have had this issue TWICE with my ***** bonnet! Get this one!The other one has a plastic stem and should not be attached to any type of car, it's so fragile! Now as for the lock, in theory, yes, its held in with a couple of pins, but drilling them out and getting replacements is a mare. 1st replacement I had, I actually built up the lock myself with the 1000 or so parts supplied, really good YouTube on how to do. 2nd time, I just took the supplied generic lock with new key...

I remember the days of pain in the stomach muscles when mines got stuck as had to sit under the engine and remove the radiator bolts swing it out the way then open the bolts on the lock mechanism to free it and uplug the sensor then pulled it open.

This is what I had to resort to- hold hacksaw blade in a rag. Cut through the grill around the  lock. Then use metal shears to cut through the cable behind the lock. Unravel some of the outer cable to expose a bit of the inner. Put mole grips on the inner and turn.  Keep mole grips in glove box for whenever you need to open bonnet. Car has since been scrapped/crushed.

So new lock turned up today and all working fine now 🙂

Just wondering if it is worthwhile getting one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283777867648?hash=item42127a9f80:g:z48AAOSwgQ9VoOBQ

My old lock and cable is fine, so thinking about using one of those to put the original back in...

What are peoples thoughts?

Be brave and gamble £4.50 🤣

My advice is to bin off the original bonnet lock and buy one from a mk4 mondeo, which uses the more traditional 'lever in the cabin' instead of the silly key under the Ford logo.

I bought one of these, and it is still in my garage! Once I got the Bowden cable replaced, I felt no need to do any mods. However, the suggestion to replace whole thing with a proper 'lever' is a great one, though the YouTube I saw on this conversion is way beyond my capability!
