Drivers Airbag Removal Help

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I need to remove my airbag so I can change my steering wheel, I have seen online that there should be a small hole to release the airbag clip and unfortunately it is not there (the car is fitted with adaptive steering). I was wondering if anyone has any information on this.

I would go to my ford dealer and ask but I live in Germany and unfortunately the dealers are not very willing when it comes to releasing information.

Many thanks simon65, but these look like they are for a vehicle that is not fitted with adapted steering. I am sure that the adaptive steering procedure is slightly different due to the motor embedded within the steering wheel and i don't have a 3mm hole at the bottom of my steering wheel cover.

Many thanks again, I appreciate it 😉

No problem. I thought the non-adaptive wheel was the same steering wheel assembly, but just without the motor fitted (plus ECU) and a locking gear ring fitted in its place to make the wheel a direct drive to the column. I guess that was a wrong assumption. Mine too is adaptive, I haven't looked to see what the fixing arrangement is. I do suspect the airbag module needs to come out on either wheel configs, just to get the the nut that fixes the wheel onto the steering column! If you find out anymore info, please post your findings here.

@Yappy, looks like the only way into the adaptive steering wheel is from the back. There are witness marks on the side of the steering column covers (either side of the wiper stalk) on mine which is where, I think, they took the top cover off to get access to the back of the steering wheel.
