Wiring tow bar Kuga 2017

I bought a tow bar and mounted it on the 2017 ford kuga, so far no stress.

The wiring seems to be easy but also difficult because not everything is logic to me (I have mounted (wiring) several towbars but this one give me a headache).

It starts with the next picture (numbered 1 through 4):

image.thumb.png.d1befa6455701c3934be4fb6ef4b8507.png

Question 1: I start with number 3, L1.

The picture what is shown in the manual is:

image.thumb.png.767b35e147cc5201d5b3e9370f020de0.png

Should wire L1 (that is Blue/Red) be connected to the brake light?

Of course I'm not going to use the clip, I'm going to solder it but I do need to know if it is correct to use the brake light for this.

Question 2: Is about L2 and L3 (number 2)

In the manual there is a choice:

image.thumb.png.71029ea7a633e940f50f99ba8dab2aa1.png

The car has a fuse box on the right side, so option 9A should be used?

I haven't look at the left part if there is the box that is shown in choice 9B.

Choice 9C is about the CAN-box in fromt of the car, I think I must not to that.

So I think option 9A should be it and that gives the next picture:

image.thumb.png.84dde08a5de8c2e9ed3192e3b6df7c13.png

So my question is, where should I find the connector with the 4 or the 5 pins?

Should these wires be connected to L2?

So the 4 or 5 pole should carry the Grey/Orange and the Purple/Orange wire?

I will also show option 9B:

image.thumb.png.7338b9b5b7a7228a428c53af4c78bf7f.png

But I think if option 9A should do it, I can skip this one.

Question 3: Is about number 1 (U1 and U2) but also about number 4 (UU1, UU2 and UU3), it confuses me.

I have a fusebox so option 10A should be choosen:

image.thumb.png.b097a8513bf49571c825c9e335825074.png

image.thumb.png.26cd6093992831dc8af28fe114872be4.png

I don't know what to do with it.

Should I connect it to the place in the fusebox?

If there was no fusebox I should use wire UU2 and UU3 to connect to the battery and UU1+U1 to U2 but that is only for constant current?

I don't need that (is only for caravans).

So if I don't need constant current, should U2 be connected at all?

The manual is not clear on that (for my understanding) so therefore these questions to you, hopefully you can help me to make the right choice about which wire to connect.

when everything is mounted, the garage still has to tell the computer that the towbar is installed but before I can do that, I must connect it first.

I hope I can get answers on question 1, 2 and 3.

I think your 2017 Kuga is going to be very un-happy if you use this kit. The CanBus system will most likely have my faults due to the extra lights. You should be fitting the Ford trailer module.

I was watching the guy fitting my Towbar and electrics earlier. The dedicated wiring loom comes with various options. There are various plugs, which plug directly into the trailer module and a wiring harness if your vehicle has the towing wiring harness pre-installed. If this isn’t installed you have to run a canbus connection at the front fuse box.

I’m now glad I got a specialist in as I wouldn’t have the first clue in sorting out the spaghetti that came with mine and what to connect or not connect.

That should be strange because the wiring says

So in mine opinion it should work.

I am at the moment trying to install the ford trailer module onto my Focus. I believe the Focus and the Kuga have very similar wiring so this is what I understand by your diagrams.

DIagram 3 is telling you to splice into the brake light wire. (If you have the ford module, there is already a stop light signal in the green plug).

So Question 2 is asking you to pick up the cambus. So you are looking for either the green or black plug on the right hand side of your boot (usually they are taped up with the loom). If you cant find the plugs on the right side, then they are asking you to locate the parking module on the left side and tap into the cambus from there. If you cant find the connections or you haven't got the parking module connections then I believe they are asking you to find the cambus somewhere else.

Question 3 is confusing but I think its telling you to pick up the live from the fuse location f26 and connect U1 to the live. It looks like they are saying, if you have the fuse box you can throw away UU1, 2 & 3.

Hope this helps, but like @unofix said, you'd be better off with the ford module.

Thanks for the anser and this helps me but in case of question 2 I need to use the CAN bus (the third option but I had't show the picture with that)?

I bought the wiring and thinking that this one fits but I have the wrong one?

Otherwise I have to ask in the garage if this one fits.

Thanks all for answering me

It will fit, it's just a lot more work and probably will have a few issues. It's not the real Ford kit, it's a 'third party' wiring kit which they are trying to integrate with a vehicle that has it's lighting circuits controlled via CanBus.

The Ford trailer module connector will be fitted somewhere in the rear of a 2017 Kuga, but which side maybe different to UK cars. Is your car LHD ?

Are you sure that you haven't got the connections in your rear loom? My focus didnt come with any extras but I've found most of the connections are taped up (sometimes hard to find) in the loom. If not I think the kit is saying you need to run wires up to your OBD port. On my focus the trailer module is on the passenger side and the parking module on the drivers side.

If the connections are not there,  then even fitting a ford module will require running wires.

Connectors if there will be not far from the fuse box on the right. Some trim/ carpet may need to be moved to see them . And as already said probably tapped up.

I notice the OP is not in the UK and may very well be LHD so reference to passenger side and drivers side could be reversed.

I just read it as Non UK, Republic of Ireland would be Non UK.

I see the confusion. UK includes Northern Ireland.

The FOC have as far as I understand, also have included Southern Ireland (Eire) as a kind of add on to the group.

Hence as I understand it "Other/Non UK" would mean that they are not in: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales, and also not in Southern Ireland.

I’m sure they’ll reveal all in due course.

Hello All,

I have asked the garage if my kit can be used on the Kuga and they said it was OK.

I have managed to get the L1 (number 3) soldered to the brake light.

U1 (number 1) I have pluged it in the fusebox (F26).

L3 (number 3) is soldered to the CANBUS (pin 3 and 11) wich was on the left side on front (driver side) of the car.

So everything is attached and the car still runs 🙂

Now to the garage so the computer can be programmed that there is a towbar on the car (removable).
