ABS module

Featured Replies

I bought a used ABS module from the breaker yard and got it fitted by an independent garage. On the way home it seems the issue is solved, however they advised me to replace front brakes as they got worn out. I also asked them to do a yearly service, including spark plugs and there is an oil in spark plug well according to the garage, which is strange as I never have to add oil between services.

Oil on spark plugs is a sign of engine wear... what's your car mileage?

That used to be very common years ago, not so much these days. Check the rocker cover (or whatever it's called now) and you will probably have a slight oil leak from the gasket.

How did you change the ABS module without coding.  Mine has now been fitted with a new module but has to be coded. ( Saga to follow )

I bought the exact same module, only difference was production year. I did not ask them what they had to do exactly, but I was under impression that you only need to enter your VIN to the module using diagnostics tools. They did not mention any problems, only that they had to do the bleeding twice.

I asked them to give me a price quote. I am waiting for it now.

Finally got my car back after 9weeks , the repaired module turned out to be faulty and returned to the repairer who then stated it was un repairable. My garage contacted me to say they would now have to fit a new unit ( no charge to me )  this was fitted but they found they could not code it. The car was sent to a Ford agent who completed the coding.

...sorry for my english, it's so bad... where is the oil? in the upper rods, or in the electrode?

I am not sure, they told me that spark plugs are being "flooded" and that the valve cover gasket needs to be replaced. I asked for a price quotation, that gasket is around 19 euros plus  2 hours job including changing front rotors and pads.

Of course, I am just roughly translating what that mechanic told me. Maybe the UK mechanic would describe it differently. I found long ago that mechanics have specific jargon which probably is not international.

Anyway, my understanding is that the oil is not on the electrodes, but somewhere on the "other side", where it is connected to ignition coil.

I do not understand, so you got a new unit for free?

The oil is not on the spark plug.

The garage is saying that there was oil in the 'well' around the spark plug. This is normally caused by a slight leak in the rocker cover gasket, which allows a small amount of oil to run down the side of the engine and collect in the recess area around the spark plug.

Ah! ok!!! Good news... so much easier to fix then... 🙂

Yes , my garage is hoping to claim compensation from the repairer. So he had to purchase a new module to get me back on the road.  For  good will ,also , having been off road for 9weeks.

Hello,

Just to let you all know I have a fault on my C-Max that presented as brakes binding after application, nearside rear, and releasing slowly but getting worse until I had to get it recovered. I misdiagnosed as a binding caliper and got that replaced. Problem persisted. At suggestion of a friend I downloaded and used Forscan, went through the brake bleed and abs pump agitation routines and the problem seems to have gone for now. Will update further however I plan anfull fluid change in the next few days to flush anything that may be there out of the system.
