Snapped Bolt in Drop Link/Stabiliser

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Mondeo Mk4 2009 Estate

Replacing the rear trailing arm bushes today. One side was successful but on the other side the bolt snapped clean in the drop link/stabiliser...

Please before I lose the will to live, can someone give me advise on how to get it out?

We have tried removing the bolt on the other end so we can just remove the trailing arm as a whole to deal with the issue, but the bolt the other side is seized solid and I do not want to snap that one too.

We have also tried drilling it.

Thank you

@dezwez We did think about just angle grinding the nut off and doing that but we are worried about cutting the trailing arm itself. There isn't much clearance really 😔

So the head of the bolt has snapped off and the remaining threded and nut is still in the hole? should be able to tap that out...or is that nut welded to the arm? I can't remember as I did my bushes a while ago.

@Frembrit Yeah the head snapped clean about 10mm in. Unfortunately the nut is welded 🤬 had the hope of cutting the welds on the nut, but not enough clearance for the grinder

I've had a fair bit of luck  using my Black n Decker heat gun on the hottest setting, leaving it on the problem nut for 10.minutes is so, then clamping some mole grips on the broken  bolt, and much to my delight it turns. I darent take a naked flame to under the car, so am pleased the heat gun has worked so far.

good news 👍

Hi All,

Just an update. We ended up taking the whole trailing arm off, angle grinding the 2 spot welds on the nut off and retrieving it. Then replacing the nut and bolt with a new high tensile M12. 👍🏻

Thank you
