Stained coolant tank makes it akward to check coolant level.

Featured Replies

Was just wondering if theres any good way for cleaning the inside of the tank or would it be better to just replace it. I know I could undo the cap and look top down but since the coolant level is mostly smack on the min level when cold its akward to check for any small drop and after a myriad of coolant leaks its something I like to keep an eye on haha.

New tank including a new cap only £16.11

After ten or so years the tanks are entering the zone for cracking, so it would be money well spent.

Thanks, might buy a new one then, will watch a video on how to swap them out myself, although I think Ive heard cases of people damaging the pipes/clips doing this

I've done Fiesta/Fusion and easy enough, but clips look slightly different on your image on a later model.

Thought I'd revist this since I replaced the tank and about a month later the new tank was back to the same state as the old one again?? 🙄

Any RadWeld in the system ?  Apparently that stains header tanks.

If you still have the old tank give it a wash out with a dilute bleach solution, wearing marigolds and goggles.

Possibly? My turbo did spring a leak due to the plug corroding from the inside before that and the AA guy that came used something to temporarily seal it so I could drive home, apart from that I cant think of anything else.

I was thinking I'd never seen a new one discolour that quickly.  It sounds like it probably is from the sealer.

Yeah maybe, I recently had a service and even he commented how badly discolured the tank was. Im not really bothered too much if its not harming the engine, ill just have to use a high powered military grade spotlight whenever I want to check the coolant level lol

If the tank was like that, then all the cooling system will be as well, so it's no surprise the new tank discoloured quickly. If it's not using coolant or getting hot, don't worry about it, no amount of flushing will get rid of it!
