Coolant tank for 2011 1.6Ecoboost

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have a 2011 1.6Ecoboost petrol Mondeo that has a leaking coolant tank. I have tried to obtain a new coolant tank from Allen Ford and aftermarket dealers using OE part number 1449986. However, the coolant tank with this part number comes with a valve pointing downwards out of the bottom, whereas the one on my car has a valve pointing horizontally out of the side of the coolant tank: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/kfcn66bnh7y7223i9swn6/Pics-of-valves-on-coolant-tank.docx?rlkey=qbd1gptfeveg98od46rnelj4c&dl=0

Edit: The part number I used was obtained from entering my registration number into the search at the Ford dealers and websites for aftermarket suppliers, so I do not understand why the part does not match the one on my car.

I wonder if anyone could help me please with a part number for the coolant tank on my car. If not I will see if I can get the tank repaired. I do not have any mechanical training and so all of the work on my car is done at a local independent service garage. Best wishes, Andy

I think the part number you need is Finis code 1453048

Many thanks for this Unofix I will contact the dealer tomorrow. From my search on the internet using the part number you gave me it looks like this is listed for a Galaxy or S-Max.

An example on eBay for Mondeo

Once again many thanks for you help Unofix, it is very much appreciated. I have contacted a Ford dealer and they agree from looking at the photos that the part number you found for me should be OK for my car. They can get me one for £30 next day so I've ordered it through them.

I'm not sure why the part number 1449986 comes up in searches for coolant tanks for my car, perhaps it's because it's an Ecoboost, but even the system at the Ford dealers gives this number when they enter my registration plate rather than the one you found.

I had an idea it would be the same as a coolant tank from a different model but didn't have a clue where to start looking.

I will ask my mechanic to fit it next week so will give some more feedback then.

Best wishes

Andy

Hi

Many thanks for you help Unofix, even the people in the parts department at a local Ford dealer agreed that part number 1453048 should fit. However, I went to collect the coolant tank today part number 1453048 (unless Ford Daventry have put the wrong tank in the packaging) and once again it seems to be the incorrect part.

I have provided a photo of the coolant tank on my car with circles showing the missing valves from part numbers 1453048 and 1449986.

I wonder if anyone could help please with the correct part number?

Best wishes

Andy

What happens if you put your VIN number into here - it should then only give you parts for your vehicle

https://www.catcar.info/ford/?lang=en

If you don't put your VIN number in but just open it to Mondeo cooling page you get these choices of tanks.

Trouble is pictures are not good enough to identify your tank

Hi Andrew sorry to hear of the problem with the tank. I do wonder if what was supplied was in fact what had been ordered since the part I quoted you should have been exactly like the one on eBay which clearly has all of the ports that I can see in your photo.

If you would like to send me a private message with your VIN number I'll check it on 3 different Ford part number sites and see if there is anything different listed.

Found this illustration, top right version.

Unfortunately I can't find the same diagram anywhere that lists the corresponding part number.

To me it shows a configuration with both ports in question.

Tried to follow a trail from the part number of the Hose shown but no joy.

Ray, the actual ford part number will be lower down on the page of the diagram

Looks like it is out of the Catcar catalogue

Tried that Trevor but frustratingly can't find a link. Second time around I've come across 2011/2 Ford variants that are hard to trace. Probably introduced to achieve homologation standards (for emissions or fuel economy) then quiety dropped to achieve cost reductions. Similar to the more recent diesel con but back then they got away with it.

Well it looks like the correct part is Ford Finis 1453048 which is Ford manufacturing part 6G91-8K218-DC

The problem is that on the later revisions of this tank the lower port was moved from the horizontal position to the vertical. The original part is no longer manufactured as the current version of 1453048 is considered suitable since it only requires the connecting pipe to be moved to the vertical position. The only way to get an exact replacement would be to track down finis 1453048, Ford manufacturing part 6G91-8K218-DB, or part 6G91-8K218-DA

The chances of finding a brand new original revision would be very unlikely, and impossible to order because the Ford ordering system uses the code Finis 1453048 which does not differentiate between different revisions.

The only one that I know who can confirm or deny the above information is correct is @iantt

Many thanks to all for your replies and help with this. Your time on this is most appreciated. The VIN for my car is WF0EXXGBBEBD80623

I agree RayC333 that the coolant tank on my car looks like top right in the diagram you found.

I'm also having doubts now whether the problem is being caused by a leaking coolant tank or if it is connected to the problems linked to the early 1.6 ecoboost engine. I've had the car for 5 and a half years and really like the way it drives, but I didn't do any research on this particular model before I bought it. Over the last 4 or 5 months the car has started to use a lot of coolant and I thought it was a leak from the tank because even if I was extra careful in topping it up there always seemed to be a drip from the bottom of the tank. However, over these last couple of days spent looking into getting a new coolant tank I have become aware of a problem regarding these engines leaking coolant into the cylinders. There was even talk of a class action against Ford on some US sites.

I will get the coolant tank checked again by a mechanic before I proceed in buying a new one. If it is the coolant leakage into the cylinders problem then it will probably become worse over time and the car will have to be scrapped as the cost of a new engine block wouldn't be worth it.

Best wishes

Andy

I've just had a look using my VIN in the CatCar link you provided Trevor and the diagram shows a number 8A080 which links to the Ford part number 1449986 which does not have the horizontal valve in addition to the one coming out at about 45 degree angle. The top right part of the diagram Ray provided has the number 8A080A which, like Ray stated earlier, does not link to a Ford part number.

When I look at the hose assembly for my car using VIN it shows the hose assembly for part 1449986, whereas the hose assembly for my car is like the one in top right of diagram provided by Ray (given number 8K276 on the diagram).

Having now read about the problems with the coolant system on the Ecoboost 1.6 petrol engines I think it may be time to scrap the car if it's not the coolant tank. The car's done 120k in it's 12 years, out of which I've put about 50k on in 5 and a half years, so not too bad considering the problems associated with this engine. I wouldn't feel right selling it on for someone else to have a major problem. However, if it is the coolant tank leaking it seems mad that it's not possible to just get the correct one from a Ford dealer by just giving them my registration number, unless I'm expecting too much on a 12 year old car.

Well done investigating the changes Unofix, good stuff.

I haven't had time to study things but it suggests to me that if the original configuration tank is not available cannot one or two hoses be changed to suit the configuration of the tank that is available

Was there a recall for the 1.6 EcoBoost in the Mondeo?

It was recalled in both Focus & Fiesta.  A low coolant level sensor was added to provide a dash warning before they run dry and catch fire.

Just wondering if there was a change to the hose config for the Mondeo that may explain why the original tank is no longer available.

Yes Tom, there were a couple of recalls in about 2019. I checked with the Ford dealer which performed the recalls and they said they didn't change the coolant tank. One recall was for the sensor you mentioned and the other was for a software upgrade.

I'm not sure if the hose configuration could be changed it's something I would have to get an expert opinion on.

I'm now tending to learn towards it being the dreaded coolant leakage into the cylinders problem I have recently found out about through trying to find a new coolant tank. Again, I will have to seek an expert opinion on this. It looks like the problem with the coolant leaking into the cylinders was much more common in the US, either because Europeans tended to buy more diesel cars or the manufacturing in the US caused more problems. Either way, some people on the forums in the US seem to think that Ford seems to have ignored the problem hoping it would sort of go away as these cars run out of warranty and are taken off the road.

I'm going to run the car for the next few months as it is while I look around for another one. I won't be doing any long runs and my daily commute is about 30 miles round trip so I will just have to check the level everyday.

Many thanks for everyone's help with this.

Best wishes

Andy
