Mk4 Ford focus 1.5d St-lineX cam belt failure

Featured Replies

See the advert on eBay for details of the cam chain. [Ford Kit: finis code 2646856]

It is a very short chain that links the two cam shafts together.

A good few years back I was looking for a 7 seater and Top of the list was the S-Max Titanium x sport. Had the mk4.5 mondeo variant at the time which was the best car by far in its class.

For a little less money have you considered the Zetec S? Same car as you're looking at but a year or two older?

Yes but it doesnt have cruise control and needs to be automatic. Cant find any Zetec S like that, and it definitely needs to be diesel and not the plagued ecoboost. Tbh I'm a little been there done that with the mk3 anyway. Great cars but just fancy a change and I really like the look of the mk4.

Where is the 2nd cam shaft and the chain?

In the ebay engine pics in the link below that was already posted only has 1 camshaft? Is there a 2nd cam shaft hidden somewhere behind it? And is the first pulley under the camshaft pulley in the pic the fuel pump?

All I see in the belt run is: single cam shaft, crank pulley, water pump, tensioner and idelr pulley and "fuel pump"? Is this correct?

At least that repair bill isnt the same as a whole engine replacement aka an ecoboom job. Thats more like £7k... so theres always that way to look at it.

The second camshaft is to the right of the first.  The chain is not visible in that picture.  It should last the life of the engine so there is no easy access to it, unlike the cambelt.

It is shown well towards the end of the video posted above.

This is the first instance I've heard of that chain failing.  This would lead me to believe it's a manufacturing defect and should be covered under warranty.

The pulley down and to the left of the cam pulley is the high pressure fuel pump.

Well that's good news then, hopefully ford think like that and they pay for the whole thing. Just have to wait till Monday now and see.

@Alexp999 - Great video, Thanks for posting. That's my curiosity satisfied.

@shaunb92 I hope you get sorted and Ford cover the damages

Update!

Ford have contacted me to say that after changing everything they quoted the engine does still not start.

They have asked for an extra hour to carry out diagnostic checks to see if there is compression.

After checking they state there is no compression in the cylinders, so it's going to need a new engine.

The garage has sent all the diagnostics to Ford customer relations to see if they will help with a good will to replace the engine.

Is it related to this ^ ?

This is the second failure of a camshaft chain in the 1.5 Ecoblue I've read about failing...

"I have a 1.5 litre diesel ford focus 2019 plate. Without any warnings my car would not start. Running absolutely fine prior. Towed to a independent ford garage they have found that the chain has snapped. I am now waiting for the engine to be completly stripped down as to weather fords will contribute to the repair cost. Any information would be great."

"a chain has snapped this is what i have been told so far... Something to do with the cam shaft?"

Quoted from someone in the ecoboost group on fb.. is there something that can be done to prevent this ? Is it cheaper to replace the chain if buying a used Ecoblue with 60k on the clock than wait for it to fail?

I'd love to know the answer to this as I'm in the process of buying one.

1.5 Ecoblue is a dry belt

Probably failure of the tensioner or it's done more mileage than you think, have you checked the service records?

If you bought the car with finance or a credit card I would start a complaint

Best case, stick a 2nd hand replacement engine in of the same code, there's plenty about. Make sure you hear it running before removal from the donor and fit a belt before you fit to your vehicle (If Ford won't pay)

Finance companies is as useless as a chocolate mantelpiece

My 2019 Focus 1.5d that I bought privately 2 months ago lost power on the motorway yesterday and would not restart. 5 hours later I was recovered home and was told that the cam belt has failed/broke. The vehicle has done 57k and has a full Ford service history all stamped in the book.

Today the car has gone into my local Ford garage and I have called the customer relations department.

Been told its going to cost £240 for the diagnostics and fingers crossed the customer relations will pay for the replacement of the engine or whatever actually needs doing or give a goodwill contribution.

Has anybody else been in this situation, need advise please.

probably the exhaust cam chain has broken same as mine if it has, just have the updated cam kit  fitted from 7mm to 8mm chain

That post was made 15th February 2024, I'd like to think the OP has found the fault and had it fixed by now.
