Ford Fiesta Mk8 1.1 Ti Vct

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My partner & I are looking at a Ford Fiesta Mk8 1.1 Ti Vct (staying away from the Ecoboost, obviously), but just wanted to find out why the 1.1's tend to have no engine problems, compared to the Ecoboost.

Do the Ecoboosts have just a big problem just for having a turbo?

There are a lot more 1.0s than 1.1s so therefore you’ll find more people with problems.

But the 1.1 still has the same wet belt design so I wouldn’t touch it either personally.

Thanks Alexp999, appreciate it.

Do you know why the Ecoboost's actually go wrong? I cant seem to see any difference between the 1.1 TI-VCT and 1.0 Ecoboost, apart that the Ecoboost uses a different lubrication system...

The internal belt (wet belt) that drives the camshafts starts to break down and then blocks the oil pickup, channels and sometimes vacuum pump.

It’s made worse by lack of maintenance, wrong oil and constant short journeys.

So there is nothing stopping that from happening on the 1.1?

Only regular maintenance, the correct oil, and avoiding short journeys wherever possible. There is a very slight difference in that the 1.1 has port injection rather than direct injection on the ecoboost. This may  reduce the possibility of fuel dilution contributing to belt deterioration but I wouldn't count on it too much!

See this earlier thread on the 1.1: https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/148073-11-any-catastrophic-failures-like-the-10-ecoboost/

If you are interested in a Fiesta size car with a small 3 cylinder engine the VW group equivalents (Audi A1, Polo, Seat Ibiza, Skoda Fabia) and the smaller Up, Mii and Citigo, use a 1.0 3 cylinder with and without turbo in various outputs from 60-110ps. This has a conventional cambelt.
