Fiesta 1.4 SPJA driveshaft oil seal

Featured Replies

Having removed the driveshaft oil seal (long shaft - right) as it began to leak after a clutch change (I will replace both at time of any clutch change in future!) the Haynes manual suggests "tapping" the seal back in until it stops.

However the gearbox housing has no machined seat for the seal so it will be forced against the bearing or the spring I believe I can see. The oil seal I removed wasn't that far in the housing and I understand there is a special tool "installer 308-039" which I believe is correct but no dimensions available.

The outer dia. of the seal is 55mm so the depth of the tool on that dia. (I assume the tool would be dia. 54 to push the seal in) must be critical - say 3 to 5mm??

Can anyone provide the dimensions of the tool or advise how far the outer face of the oil seal should be placed in the gearbox housing - I'm guessing just beyond the chamfer as there's  no obvious dirt beyond that, so about 3mm in?

Image of the output final drive (right) and bearing and the driveshaft.

Note - no oil seal lip provided - its bored through. Therefore correct position of the seal is needed. Witness marks on large dia for seal and what looks like bearing marks and smaller shaft dia.

The rust must show external position of seal (dust seal).

I've noticed that there are 2 widths of seal quoted - 8 or 10mm. which is correct for Feb 2010 IB5?

Part number shows as 1096669 up to Sept 2010.

However, those seals were known to be poor quality so that number may have been superseded again on Fords systems.  The public catalogues are a few years out of date.

Interestingly, aftermarket suppliers show both 8mm and 10mm seals as suitable for that part number.

I replaced the oil seals on my mk5 fiesta the other week.

Just tap it in with either a rubber mallet, or by using a piece of wood and a hammer, or you can also use the old oil seal on top of the new one and tap it in, until it is flush with the outer face, you don't need to push them in any further.

I made the mistake the first time I did it by seating them in as far as they would go, they leaked, now that they are in flush they don't leak anymore.

YouTube has some good videos on fitting new oil seals.

Thanks guys, certainly the depth of the housing would support both widths of seal. That's my concern Nissaki, Haynes may not have updated their manual (online may be different).

If I get the dimensions of the tool I'll post.  I think your correct - tap in until flush, which is the easy bit, then just beyond the chamfer. As I removed a seal of 8mm depth replacing that with a 10mm should put the seal onto clean steel.

Done some calcs, made an assumption that the start of the rust states at the chamfer and from what I can measure it looks like the 8mm would be best as the 10mm could run beyond the shaft. Therefore Ford may have changed the engagement to allow a 10mm oil seal on later mks so improving the seal?

So the seal depth must be at the chamfer - 3mm. Hope so !!

If you give your registration to the suppliers don't they tell you which one is correct for your car? that's what I did.

All I got was "both sizes are listed" from suppliers, which confirms Tom's  statement, so as I pulled an 8mm one out, that will be what I put back in.

I've seen different widths each side, and that must have been a previous install. Ford are usually very good at configuration control but keep the information guarded. I've had no luck in finding the dimensions of "installer 308-039" which must fit multiple vehicles.

So Ill try the install with the 8mm to my drawing and let you know.

Hi,

Have you had any luck changing the seal? I’m struggling after I bought them from Ford Lookers.

They confirmed the dimensions of the outer seal is 55 mm but the new seals won’t go in at all.
I tried everything I could think of and still no luck.

Thanks!

@blueoveralls Have you had any luck? I’m in the same position as you.
The genuine Ford seals 55mm in length and 10mm in height are just a bit big compared with the Aftermarket seals 55mm in length and 8mm in height. The aftermarket ones do have a inward lip on the metal lip side.
