Will a stock Mk7 Fiesta ST Exhaust fit the Metal Edition?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, first post!

TL;DR - Will an OEM Mk7.5 Fiesta ST Exhaust fit my Fiesta Metal Edition (Mk7), considering pipe diameter, routing, and acoustics?

So my Fiesta Metal Edition currently has a stock exhaust, and I'd like to keep it that way, but rust and corrosion have finally eaten away enough that it scraped through an MOT with some Gun Gum exhaust putty, and since then one of the exhaust hangers has 'detached' itself from the rest of the exhaust...  It's fine for just now, but it definitely needs replacing!

Now, OEM Metal Edition exhausts seem to be stupidly hard to get.  My exhaust is a one-piece system from cat-back, from factory, so I know I'll need a 2 piece system to replace it, or at least the rear silencer section and some exhaust clamps to attach it to my current exhaust pipe (if it can take clamps okay).  Apparently, the Ford factory in England that makes parts is shut due to Asbestos (or so a local garage told me), and the one half of the exhaust that's made in Germany was on backorder, so a brand new OEM Metal Edition exhaust seems to be out of the question.  I'd rather not go for an aftermarket kit as IMO they all sound a tad obnoxious for a not-that-high-power car.  So, unless I can get a decent quality Metal Edition Exhaust from a breakers yard, ebay etc., I had thought - would the ST's Exhaust fit?  Because if so, that opens up so many more options.

When I say fit - I mean both physically, with the correct bends in the pipe, the correct diameter (I know the Metal Edition has larger (3"?) diameter pipes than the Zetec S!  Again, I can't find any definitive sources for the exact differences for the Metal Edition on the internet), correct placement of the twin tips for the bumper etc, but also in terms of acoustics?  Obviously each back box is designed for an individual engine, and the ST's exhaust is designed around a turbocharged engine instead of a naturally aspirated one like the Metal Edition (+ whatever other changes there are, if any).  The part numbers for the Metal and ST's silencers are different, so I know they're different in at least some way, but does this matter?  I don't want to find out that the ST's exhaust produces some weird resonance noises at certain speeds the hard way, especially if I kept the Resonator part of the exhaust, and only replaced the silencer section...  😄

I can't seem to find an answer to either my resonance/acoustics/sound question, or the exhaust fitment/compatibility dilemma online, so apologies if I've just missed it :).  Any expertise or advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers guys,
Lewis

I'd be very surprised if it didn't.

Try, then you'll know

Another thought - the Metal/1600S was pretty similar in tune to the (then Ford approved) Mountune MP140 upgrade for the 1.6 Mk 7 Zetec S. Don't think that's available now but Mountune might be able to advise what exhaust they used.

Several Members have fitted ST back boxes with adaptors to 1.0 Ecoboost and reported increased (but acceptable to them) noise levels.

Otherwise, you could discuss your requirements with an exhaust specialist - several members have used:

As you say, the Metal was pretty rare even back in the day, and has now been out of production for 12 years or so and the main priority is to get a legal exhaust.

I wondered if the standard Metal exhaust was simply as per normal 1.6 Fiesta but with a twin pipe back box, but according to this excerpt from Evo's review at the time, perhaps not:

"an overhauled exhaust system (wider pipes, modified rear muffler internals, reduced back pressure, new chrome twin pipes)"

Thanks for the comments!  I agree, technicalities aside, just getting a working exhaust system takes priority, although I always find the technicalities an interesting topic.

For now, I think I'll try to source a second hand Metal edition system from a breakers yard, but failing that potentially very quick search, I'll probably just have to take a leap of faith on an ST backbox and figure out any incompatibilities as I go :).

If anyone else has some knowledge or advice on my original post, I'd always be keen to hear it!

Hi. Any progress yet? I have a 2010 zetec s mk7 and recently installed an st diffuser to it. Was thinking of getting an st catback exhaust from cobra or miltek and was wondering if these would fit mine. I thought if I get the zetec s version it may hang too low at the tail pipes in relation to my newly added st diffuser with the cutout for the exhaust?
