Starting issues

Featured Replies

Been lurking for a while, first post 😊

I'm having issues starting my Edge. I mainly use it driving to and from work, which is only a 4 mile round trip, we mainly bought it to tow our caravan.

I parked the car at home on Thursday, having finished work, put the handbrake on, and the stop/start kicked in. Got in it this morning and no dash lights, not even trying to turn over. However, the more times I turn it on and off the more the car comes to life, and eventually starts.

This is happening regularly. I've put the car on charge several times since Christmas. Each time it'll start with no issues for a week or so then it struggles again, but it always starts after 4 or 5 tries.

I bought the car last August, the dealer fitted new a Ford parts battery as the heated steering wheel wasn't heating up and was advised this by Ford themselves.

Hope someone has some ideas as to what it could be?

Thanks in advance.

Paul

Yes, the battery is discharging.

Investigation is needed into what is draining the system, the car is not going to sleep

Thanks for your reply.

That was my first thought, as the new battery didn't fix the heated steering wheel issue, so through warranty had a new one fitted just before Christmas. Would that not completely drain the battery if it's not fully sleeping? As I said, if I try a few times, it eventually starts. 😐

Just taken a voltmeter reading of 12.2v, with the car being stood for 8 hours after getting into work.

It could just be a software fault, a module may not be going to sleep.

But it needs investigating as you'll constantly have troubles with flat batteries

I think you will find that the battery State Of Charge was so low when you parked it, that the car was unable to complete it's shut down procedure and left the system stuck in limbo.

That battery is going to need some serious charging to get it back to at least 80% charged.

Put it on charge for a full 24 hours (minimum) and things will probably return to normal.

That's interesting @unofix I thought stop/start only worked when the battery was at good level of charge.

It's booked in at Ford for a service and MOT at the end of the month, so I stopped off on my way home and explained the issue to them. I'll let you know what they find 😬

That is indeed generally true.

However when the battery state of charge becomes extremely low we have see all sorts of odd behaviour.

If you have a voltmeter, check the charging voltage, it should be between 15 and 16volts, quite high! I've checked a few of our transits, they also charge 15v

Check the tailgate on level ground

Open up in auto, let it close, you should hear the electric lock engage and the tailgate gently pull down just a little. The tailgate can look locked but the microswitch in the lock has to close for the module to shut down and go to sleep, if not it will drain the battery

The tailgate is a bit of an issue with Edges, they only have 1 powered strut, fitment can be a bit of hit and miss, the plastic guide on the electric lock can wear away.

Plenty of new locks on Ebay and Aliexpress, that's when you know there's a problem, the chinese copy the Ford lock and sell em cheap £45

Thanks for your input @Darreng I have read your thread on the tailgate issue.

Just tried mine and everything seems fine to me.

With the engine running it's charging at nearly 16v. The battery was down to 12.3v having been on charge from Monday night till yesterday morning 😐
