Front subframe bolts

Featured Replies

Hi all! I recently managed to break one of my subframe bolts and finding a replacement has been difficult as I dont know precisely what it is that I need! I was hoping someone here may be able to help with like a part number or something? The bolt goes on the outside of the subframe where it bolts in near to the wing, the head of the bolt is 13mm. Luckily I have a photo of the one from the other side! Appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction as the car has been stuck now for nearly 2 weeks between my efforts to remove the broken bolt and trying to source a new one! Thanks!

Car is a 2006 fiesta 1.4 petrol

Back again! Looks like the captive nut inside the chassis (?) Has rounded and is jumping inside the chassis instead of the bolt rotating, does anyone know the part for that bit as it seems it'll have to be cut open and replaced..

Captive nuts won't have part numbers as they'll be part of a larger assembly.

Ahh no worries! Is there any way I can repair that as I'm not entirely sure where to go from here otherwise? Cheers!

Not really my area I'm afraid.  If the nut is still good but the welds have broken then maybe it can be welded back in.  If not, you'll have to measure it and find an identical one, but again will need welding in.  If you're not able to weld then it'll need someone else anyway.

I have got away with these in the past by wedging a flat blade screwdriver in the side to hold the nut still while tightening, but that won't work for every captive nut, and definitely won't work if the threads have been crossed or stripped.

Not a fault I'd envy anyone to have unfortunately.

No worries mate! Yeah its a nightmare! As far as I'm aware they've always had a little bit of movement back/forth... not sure if thats meant to be like that but both sides do it and I assume its possibly to help position the subframe. Hopefully ill be able to sort something! Car is on nearly 190K and I'd love to be able to see it though to 200K

If you were trying to lower the subframe, then you should support the full weight of it on jacks hard up against the body, and NOT use the securing bolts as jacks to lower and raise the sf.... you've just found out why. On my mk3 Mondeo, you can access the nuts by lifting the carpet where the nuts are, and there's a mesh you can cut open to get to the nut. There's a guy on youtube, Retrorestore, who had to do it on his Mondeo, not sure if he bought a new nut, but anyway he spot welded it back into place. If I find the video - he's done loads! -! I'll post up the links here.

Part 4 is when he screwed up and damaged it, and part 8 is how he fixed it..... hope it helps you!

Cheers mate yeah the location of the one I've had issue with isn't accessible like yours, I didn't use the bolts to take the weight of the subframe but judging by the bolt on the other side I suspect they were over torqued at some point and it was heavy on corrosion etc as it snapped clean off when I attempted to loosen it! I'll have a look at those videos and hopefully I'll be able to get somewhere! Thanks pal!
