Seat removal and airbags

Featured Replies

I want to remove front passenger seat from my Fiesta Mk7 and then drive somewhere (don’t ask why I just do!)

Normal advice is to disconnect the battery before removing a seat to remove risk of airbag deploying.

1) is removing fuse for ‘airbag module’ sufficient rather than disconnecting battery.

2) once seat is out and I start ignition will I get an airbag warning light that goes out once seat back in place. Or will I have to clear an airbag DTC with my V-linker OBD?

thanks!

Yes you will get an Air Bag (SRS fault) warning light. Yes removal of the seat and the subsequent fault of the SRS will invalidate the vehicle insurance unless you notify them and get approval of the modification.

@unofix Even after I put the seat back in? Or do you mean just while I drive without the seat my insurance is invalid?

As long as after you reinstall the seat you can clear the SRS warning then your insurance should be fine.

While the seat is out and there is a SRS warning then you would need to speak with your insurer. Otherwise if you were to have an accident or even just get pulled over by Plod for an unrelated matter you could find yourself in trouble.

@unofix Will the SRS warning appear in the list of DTC’s found using the V-linker OBD? Presumably it be as straight forward as simply resetting the DTC once seat back in. Or is there a chance it gets stuck on forever?

(I hadn’t thought of insurance issue when driving without seat so I’ll enquire with my insurance company.)

Yes, it will show as a DTC code. You will be able to clear it once the seat is reinstalled.

Hi.

If you have any issues with insurance at all then please feel free to drop me a line.
