Fiesta 80K miles struggling to put in gear

Featured Replies

Hi all, appreciate any responses.  My daughter's 2015 fiesta almost feels like the gears are blocked.  You take your foot off the clutch and then it works fine again.  My local garage, who I trust, says  it might just need bleeding.  Is this something a novice could try to save her a few quid?  Many thanks

You need a new garage, and no I'd not recommend you try bleeding it.

Problem is more likely to be with either the clutch master cylinder or with the slave cylinder. Or of course the car just needs a new clutch at 80,000 miles.

They did say they'd try bleeding first then a cylinder external to the gear box then the cylinder in it as not possible to determine which one it might be so doing the cheapest options in order.

It is usually the one inside the clutch bell housing (slave cylinder) that fails first. That said, it is good practice to replace the master cylinder first as it is much easier to get at.

If it is the slave cylinder that needs replacing then you should always fit a new clutch at the same time as the gearbox will have to be removed to replace the slave cylinder.

Thanks for that.  I'll certainly mention them replacing the clutch if changing the slave.  Many thanks again.😊
