Fiesta clutch pedal height and switches

Featured Replies

hi, new here, tia

Ive just bought a Fiesta 1.2 2012 petrol (13 reg) for my daughter. The clutch pedal bite is very high and was wondering if it can be altered to about 2/3rds from the floor. Ive had a look at pedal and there is no bolt to adjust like with a cable system. Ive checked brake/clutch fluid and its at the max level line. I saw 2 switches when i was looking, i know the closest to the driver is to do with cruise control, and i think the one nearest the floor is meant to be for starting the engine. however to start this car you can just turn the key without pressing down the clutch pedal, so is the switch or something faulty? clutch feels fine and can pull away in 4th without slipping and gear changes are fine so think clutch is ok. 59,000 miles on clock

Hi Stephen,

Afaik there is no adjustment on the hydraulic clutch pedal. A high bite can be an indication that the clutch is nearing the end of its life, though yours sounds ok. I have found the biting point on my recent Fords pretty high anyway, though, (at least for my foot!)

The handbook does say depress the clutch to start. Certainly my most recent Fords won't start unless you do. The handbook for a 2012 (extract below)  does say you should depress the clutch, but doesn't actually say it won't start if you dont.

We had a 2012 1.25 Fiesta but tbh I can't remember if it would start without depressing the clutch**, as I've always done that anyway!

(My wife's SEAT Mii gives the same advice in the handbook and that definitely starts without depressing the clutch!)

Btw you can get an electronic copy of the handbook here:

Edit PS: **though the comment in the handbook extract about releasing the clutch while starting suggests that is the case

STARTING A PETROL ENGINE

Note:   You can only operate the starter for a limited period of time, for example 10 seconds. The number of start attempts is limited to approximately six. If you exceed this limit, the system will not allow you to try again until a period of time has elapsed, for example 30 minutes.
Cold or hot engine
Vehicles with manual transmission
Note:   Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
Note:   Releasing the clutch pedal during engine start may stop the engine cranking and return to ignition on.
  1. Fully depress the clutch pedal.
  1. Start the engine.

Thanks for that. Hopefully the clutch is ok.

Would bleeding the clutch affect the biting point or just the stiffness of the pedal? tia

Shouldn't need to bleed it unless you suspect air in the system and "pumping" the pedal alters things.

had a look and nothing you can alter, like in the olders cars which you just moved the bolt. looks like we'll just have to live with it unforfunataly
