Rattling under car

Featured Replies

I was driving my car today when I heard a loud bang from what I thought was the front right.  It was odd I hadn’t driven over anything at all, it just happened as if something just failed.  I was able to drive normally afterwards with no engine, steering or suspension issues….. however, later on I started to get a loud rattle whenever I went over rough roads etc.  the sound sounded as if it was coming from underneath the right side of the car, underneath or behind the driver seat.  Thoughts ???  Exhaust loose or worse, snapped anti roll bar ?

There's not much behind the driver's seat underneath.  Exhaust is really the only thing in that area.

Snapped spring seems more likely.  If you can get it up on a ramp or axle stands to have a look around that would be best.

Agree with tomsfocus definitely sound like a spring..if the car is on a flat level surface you may find its leaning to one side

Yep !!

I go with Tom on this and say a snapped spring 👍

Car went into the garage a few days ago and I just got the call to say I needed ….. two new front coil springs.  👏👏👏👏

Not a difficult job for a garage. I changed 2 ( one broken) on our driveway using a eBay spring compressor. 2008 1.6 tdci 5 door fiesta.

Heck defo' a spring like the others have said, you need to STOP driving the vehicle and check both springs, if you spot one is snapped and the broken section IS loose, then get it out asap, it's know for a snapped spring to move about and stick out, acting like a raptor claw rips into the sidewall of the tyre, causing an immediate blow out, be wise and safe and thoroughly get it checked.

One easy way to see if a spring is snapped is simply measure the distance of the tyre to the top of the arch, do both sides, a snapped spring will lower one side of the car.

That's good news, when it's all done get the car checked that the tracking is bang on again, common for most garages to never check this, nor to tell you to get all the front fully checked, soon wear the tyres out if something is not aligned up right.
