Help diagnosing a misfire

Featured Replies

Hoping you lot can help me diagnose a problem please. My mechanic unsure how to progress, thought I’d approach people who know the engine.

2013 fiesta 1.0 ecoboost. Engine and turbo replaced by Ford in 2020, around 50k miles on this engine. Serviced every year.

Car has recently developed a misfire. Happens reliably when maintaining revs over around 2.5k and is most noticeable on wide open throttle. Car will judder and code reader has confirmed misfire. If I hold the throttle open it will be unable to gain revs and flashes an EML which disappears off dash when I back off the gas. It appears to put the car in limp mode where it’s like it’s not boosting and, for some reason, it will force the stop start feature to disable.

My mechanic read the codes. Confirmed misfire, one related to boost which was cleared and didn’t come back and from memory one related to ignition which made him think spark plugs - just had these replaced and no improvement.

The car drives fine under 2.5k however anything about 70mhp or any hard acceleration is out of the question. I’m having to baby it around with gentle throttle application to avoid upsetting it.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Faulty coil would be my next step.  The diags should tell you which cylinder is misfiring so you only need to change one coil.  You can swap the bad one with a good one to see if the misfire moves to the other cylinder.

Yeah, classic symptom of failing coils or plugs. You've ruled out the plugs so swap the coils round as suggested.
