Help with 2010 Diesel starting issue?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I recently got a 2010 1.4l Diesel TCDi, RHD. I believe it's MK7 but I have also read that 2010 models are on the cusp so not certain.

I've had a couple of issues with the car starting - the first batch of issues seem to have been fixed since swapping out the glow plugs. Since the swapping, I've now had a new issue - the car doesn't like to start first time if I try and start it within a few minutes of turning it off. This has happened to me when getting fuel, popping into a corner shop, adjusting parking etc. When this happens, it doesn't even crank, instead makes a strange whirring noise and then just stops. As soon as I reset the key and try again, it'll start.Has anyone encountered this before, or have any idea what this could be? The garage I got it from are really dragging their feet getting it looked at, they have suggested it could be a key issue, but it starts fine if it's left alone for a good 5-10 mins after turnin off.

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome!
Whilst it would be lovely to know the issue and be able to diagnose it at long distance my suggestion is to put it firmly into the selling garage's court and require them to fix it in what is hopefully the warranty period?:

It's still under warranty & I am fully intending on having them sort it, I'd just like to try and get an idea of what it is so I have a bit more knowledge as at the moment all I have is them saying it could be the key! I'm not planning on touching/fixing myself while they should cover it, just wanted to be more prepared with a possible cause.

Thank you for the link, it'll be a great resource if it comes to having to get more serious over it 🙂

That sounds like the starter motor gear is spinning but not being thrown into the flywheel.  It could be a wiring fault, though I suspect the garage will replace the starter motor as the cheapest option without using an auto-electrician.

A couple of people have suggested that! I think that'll be the first thing we ask them to look at. Hopefully not too bad of a fix. Thanks for your reply 🙂

Agree with your approach and very sensible to get as much background as possible to be able to discuss.

Agree also with @TomsFocus regarding starter  or control (based on our long distance diagnosis and your stated symptoms - the 5/10 minute wait MAY be some thermal issue?)
However, I'd tend to keep that in your back pocket and whilst mentioning "Could it be the starter motor or ..." I'd let them decide how to progress this as long as it gets fixed.
They are mentioning a key issue (perhaps immobiliser) and those can be very expensive and difficult to find and fix but it is down to them to get it done and turn it into a reliable vehicle for you.

Hope it gets sorted soon!

Hi everyone! Thanks for your help with this, I thought I'd update as it's now sorted (I hope!). As suspected, it was the starter motor. I've since replaced it & not had the issue occur again.

Thanks again to everyone for their help and suggestions! It's much appreciated 🙂
