my car made a weird noise :(

Featured Replies

hi, yesterday while parking my car (2014 Fiesta MK7 1.0 Ecoboost with almost 150 000 km on it) made a very strange screeching noise and i was hoping somone could identify it.

For context:

I was parking and had just pulled the handbrake when I accidentally released the clutch pedal partially while the car was still in first gear and my foot was on the brake, preventing the car from moving. Realizing my mistake, I quickly pressed the clutch back in, but not before the engine nearly stalled.

As soon as I did this, a loud screeching noise started. I then moved the gear selector to neutral, but the noise continued until I turned off the engine, at which point it completely stopped. (the video stopped abruptly because the dashcam turns off with the ignition)

The clutch was fully depressed while the noise occurred.

After restarting the car, the noise was completely gone.

I drove the car for a long time afterward without hearing any unusual sounds.

I think the starter motor got engaged and stuck in the ring gear.  On modern cars, they will generally restart with a clutch press after stalling.  But in this case it happened so quickly that engine may still have been moving when the starter was re-engaged.  It shouldn't happen, but that's what it sounds like.  As long as it's all working again now, it's probably fine.

That sounds like a very plausible explanation. Thanks a lot! I was worried that it was much worse.
