Hunt the Mark 3.5 Horn Relay

Featured Replies

Hello All,

Here's a challenging one.

My Quantum kit car is based on a '94 1.6 SRi XR2. The builder put on a triple air horn set that I'm replacing with a pair of Astra horns. When I press the horn button on the end of the indicator stalk nothing happens so I'm thinking duff relay. I exepcted to hear a click.

The fuse/relay block diagram here is for a Mk.3 and relay A is the suspect. However,my block only has four relay sockets on the 'front row'.

The horn relay is obviously lurking somewhere so can anybody reveal the truth?

Thank you for reading.

Not all Fiesta Mk3 had the horn relay fitted. From memory, I think it was only the higher spec models with the twin horns that had a relay.

I would expect that your triple horn system has a stand alone relay which could be fitted just about anywhere. Is there an extra wire capable of carrying around 15A connected to the battery positive terminal ? If so then follow it and you will probably find the horn relay.

Thank you unofix.

It looks like this could go either way...

The Haynes manual confirms that in '92 on models, relay A is the horn one. The pic below is from this manual. It's Diagram 3a: Ancillary circuits – horn (R2i and RS models) and wash/wipe. The relay concerned is No.8.

As it stands, there's a pretty light gauge red/yellow wire where the air horn compressor was. Now here's the rub - the car's original builder was clearly not to be trusted with electrics. For example, he fitted one of those arm-the-missile jet fighter switches to make the cooling fan come on. This switched is rigged with very spindly wires and those tiny spade connectors. There are also Botchlocks (Scothlocks) in quantity. There was also a push pad on the centre of the steering wheel with a red and a black . Guess what, it didn't work!

So, I'll put a test bulb on the red/yellow wire and try the stalk button and see what happens. My Astra horns are plastic Windtones so they deserve a relay in any case. I suppose relay VIII on the Mk.3 diagram could be the one but it has nothing to say at present,
