IB5 5 speed gearbox 16 plate st line 140ps oil capacity

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, knowing that Ford apparently under-fills this gear-boxes I want to do an oil change with the 75w-90oil that Ford recommend but I I’m not exactly sure the oil capacity that I should be putting in.

Thanks

Says who ?

The gearboxes are fitted with a fill / level plug. They are filled until the oil starts to come out of the level plug, hence you don't need to know the capacity.

Just drain out and then refill until the fluid comes out of the level hole.

That's the fill process, there's no set amount

In my experience it is certainly worth knowing in advance roughly how much you are going to need as Sod's law says you won't buy quite enough if you don't! With this in mind, the workshop manual states a from-dry capacity of 2.3L and should be filled to within 5-10mm of the bottom of the fill/inspection hole. If only concerned about the level I'd just top it up rather than do a full change.

a very funny statement for the workshop manual to say. How would you be able to see when the oil is 10mm below the fill hole ?

Isn't the idea of the fill level hole in the side of the gearbox that it does what it says on the tin ? Fill until the oil comes out of the level hole.

It's one of those 'fabricate a suitable tool'-type scenarios (in this case a small allen key shaped device would suffice). I agree it would be a whole lot easier to have it so you fill until it spills out, as is the case on many a gearbox, so not sure why Ford took a different path. Might be an H&S/environmental thing?

I'm not certain about that one but with some Gearboxes you need a piece of Rod of a certain length with the end bent down by a certain amount to give the correct level below the Filler Hole.

Edit you beat me to it @MJNewton
