What is this sensor and why is it covered in oil?

Located on the side of the gearbox.

Its the reverse light switch, and im gonna guess i need my gearbox oil looked at... Cant be healthy.

That does look grim but I think it's probably just picked up road grime over time.

As manual gear oil isn't pressurised, I don't think it will have penetrated the loom as it does with VCT solenoids.  So just a new switch and a bit of degreaser should be all that's needed here.

My car failed on its MOT yesterday with "Reversing lamp inoperative". Bulbs were ok but the the reversing light switch looked exactly like this!

Unlucky. If your car was before September 2009 you would have got away with it.

Well those who have read my other threads will know its not my only problem so maybe renewing the gearbox oil might be a healthy option anyway. Im still confused by my main issue.
