When to change the dreaded wet belt

Featured Replies

I have a 2018 ecoboost, I bought in 2022 before I was aware of the ecoboom reputation. I have been thinking about trading it in but having looked at the cost of used cars at the moment I'm having second thoughts, seems it may be more economical to get the work done and keep the car for a few more years yet.

I've seen a lot of conflicting advice online about when the wet belts need changing, any thoughts on this? Is there any warning, or is it a case of no one knows until they take the car apart? Mileage is 55k, it's been serviced annually and using the correct oil, though I've not done anything above that (and can't imagine the previous owner did either, it was fully serviced but I don't know any specifics)

The advice I've seen online is at 70k, or anywhere from 6yrs-10yrs old. Unsurprisingly the garages that deal with these are at the lower end and ford are at the opposite...

Better get it done for a piece of mind, Just got my Mondeo Cam Belt changed at 8 Years old and 60.000 miles. Was told and saw that the old belt was not far off snapping . So glad i did not take Fords advice of 10 Years or 125,000 .

I'd say that in your case age is going to be more important than the mileage.

8 years from date of registration would be my recommendation. 👍

Thanks both, that's helpful. I'll get this year's MOT out of the way and get it done in the next year. I have seen some horror stories of them going around this age and mileage so just hoping I'm not one of the particularly unlucky ones!
