Wheel Alingnment

Featured Replies

My car (2022 Fiesta ST3) was pulling slightly to the right, and the steering wheel centered slightly down to the right.

Took it for alignment and these are the results prior to realignment:

FRONT
Left Front
Camber -1°22 GOOD (tolerance -0°44 to -1°44)
Caster +3°22 POOR (tolerance +4°39 to +3°27)
Toe    +0°21 POOR (tolerance +0°02 to +0°14)

Right Front
Camber -0°58 GOOD (tolerance -1°44 to -0°44)
Caster +4°04 GOOD (tolerance +3°27 to +4°39)
Toe    +0°25 POOR (tolerance +0°14 to +0°02)

Total Toe    +0°46 POOR (tolerance +0°04 to +0°28)
Steer ahead  -0°02 GOOD (tolerance -0°03 to +0°03)

REAR
Left Rear
Camber -0°40 GOOD (tolerance -0°08 to -1°08)
Toe    +0°18 POOR (tolerance +0°00 to +0°15)

Right Rear
Camber -0°20 GOOD (tolerance -1°08 to -0°08)
Toe    +0°13 GOOD (tolerance +0°15 to +0°00)

Total Toe    +0°31 POOR (tolerance +0°01 to +0°31)
Thrust       +0°02 GOOD

-----------------------------------------------------------

After alignment

FRONT
Left Front
Camber -1°24 GOOD (tolerance -0°44 to -1°44)
Caster +3°22 POOR (tolerance +4°39 to +3°27)
Toe    +0°08 GOOD (tolerance +0°02 to +0°14)

Right Front
Camber -0°58 GOOD (tolerance -1°44 to -0°44)
Caster +4°04 GOOD (tolerance +3°27 to +4°39)
Toe    +0°08 GOOD (tolerance +0°14 to +0°02)

Total Toe    +0°16 GOOD (tolerance +0°04 to +0°28)
Steer ahead  -0°00 GOOD (tolerance -0°03 to +0°03)

REAR
Left Rear
Camber -0°39 GOOD (tolerance -0°08 to -1°08)
Toe    +0°16 POOR (tolerance +0°00 to +0°15)

Right Rear
Camber-0°20 GOOD (tolerance -1°08 to -0°08)
Toe    +0°14 GOOD (tolerance +0°15 to +0°00)

Total Toe    +0°31 GOOD (tolerance +0°01 to +0°31)
Thrust       +0°00 GOOD

From the before and after measures that have not been changed (rear left toe), the measurement error is at least 0°02.

---------------------------------------------------

I understand the rear wheels cannot be aligned (easily). The left rear toe was measured at +0°18 and +0°16; and Ford's spec is 0°00 to +0°15. It's not clear if the tolerance is exceeded or it is measurement error. Clearly, if the measure was slap bang in the middle, +0°07 there is no issue at all.

---------------------------------------------------

Finally, the question:
The car is under warranty for another month or so. Is the rear toe something that is worth getting Ford to fix, or is it trivial? My milage is 15k per year, and the roads I drive on (UK) are shocking.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought the data might be useful!

cheers
W

My comments:
Left front caster is just outside spec - can it be adjusted - unlikely?
They have adjusted the front toe to bring it within spec by their equipment (see below)
Can rear toe be adjusted? (it can on ours and has needed to be)

I only  get this checked when tyre wear is obviously bad  or new components fitted (track rod ends screwed on exactly the same number of turns made the front alignment totally wrong feeling unsafe)
Unlikely that any alignment adjustment will be covered by warranty as they will probably say "wear and tear on our crappy roads not covered" (or blame the driver for not avoiding potholes)
If you took car to another place and had the alignment checked again, I'd be surprised if they got the same results.
Every time I get an alignment (not often) they say "with the state of the roads, you should be getting it done every few months"
If you go for a check it will ALWAYS  need adjustment (especially if free check)
Alignment checks with laser gear etc don't (AFAIK) leave it alone if it is within the tolerance zone, they always want to set it spot on (as measured by their equipment  - see above) meaning you have to pay.
I'm unsure what adjustments can actually be made on Fiesta, most angles are built in but you should obviously try to get satisfaction.
I know I'm being cynical but I'd love to hear the outcome of this!

Front left caster was unable to be adjusted.

Rear alignment was unable to be adjusted (rear suspension is not independent).

I tend to agree that another workshop would measure slightly different results; as can be seen from the left rear toe which was not adjusted but measured differently (slightly).

I only got the alignment done because the car was pulling slightly to the right. It seems better now.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had issues with my Fiesta ActiveX pulling to the right slightly, I had the tracking done which solved nothing but eventually found the issue was the tyre pressures were going 2 psi or so over the recommended pressures when they were warm. I've reduced the pressures now to 2/3 psi  below the manufacturers pressures and the car is transformed. The car does have the 18 inch wheels fitted with 205/40 tyres which possibly didn't help. Hope you manage to resolve your issue.
