Orange spanner light on dash

Featured Replies

Hi all,

A orange spanner light has started to occasionally appear on my dash (2019 Focus). It shows up usually when on Motorway and in 5th or 6th gear going up a slight incline. The car shudders but generally maintains a decent speeds and not necessarily in a limp mode. Perhaps a slight loss of power but not massively concerning. Light disappears when engine is turned off and on.

Anyone any idea what the cause may be and if it is something I should be concerned by?

Thanks in advance!

Yes,very.

Until you use FORScan and get the actual Ford specific DTC the best we could hope to is suggest around 500 possible causes.

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

OR

For diagnostic use only:

Thanks. I'll get it checked out ASAP. Any idea if I will need to get it checked while light is showing as it resets itself when I turned off engine and put it back on again..?

Just a further update on this.

After driving 100miles, car has not shown orange spanner warning light and was running fine, no unusual sounds or noises, comfortably covered a good range of speeds on and off motorway. Just from reading through previous threads, I have a feeling it may have been related to battery charge as I rarely use the car and my last few trips in the last month have been 5 minute journeys, give or take, to supermarket.

Could that be a potential explanation? Will the FORscan display possible error codes now that the warning light is no longer appearing?

Background to car if it helps, has had a full service each year with spark plugs changed on last service which was October 24.

Appreciate any guidance that can be offered! Thanks!

Battery maintainer, otherwise it looks as if you're go to go.👍

Usually yes. The DTC will be logged and showing that 'malfunction is not present at the time of reading'

An update if interested, mechanic described error code recording as an 'engine knock' and put it down potentially to bad fuel or potentially faulty sensor if light appears again.

Hoping someone can help with this again. The spanner has returned again, last shown in June 25. Error code is p130D. Down to engine knock. Anyone got any suggestions on anyway I can solve this? It seemed to trigger after a very long 4 hour stop start drive with varying speeds. That is also what triggered it last time.

Any advice appreciated!

Try 99 Octane Petrol and see if the fault comes back.

Thanks Tizer, I did search after my post and saw similar suggestions. Expensive time to do it, £50 for half a tank! Fingers crossed that does the trick!

Tesco do 99 Octane Petrol cheaper than the big name retailers.

If that does not work the Knock Sensor or the Wiring to it may be faulty.

What about Archoil (the diesel version is recommended by at least 2 people on here!):

By my calculations, at the recommended dose, you get premium fuel for half the differential garages charge?

I never would have considered a product like that, thank you.

anyome had any experience of using this?

It looks like a sort of One Shot intermittent treatment rather than a small regular dosing for long term use:
https://www.wynns.uk.com/product/formula-gold-fuel-system-treatment/
I don't have any experience of using it.

  1. One bottle treats up to 60 liters

  2. Every 3000km or every 3rd tank

So £15.50 for 500ml to cover 60l or a tankful then every 3 fills rather than Archoil 1ml/l of fuel ongoing @ £26/l (so covers 1000l)
Over to you (or others for their opinions but I've never found anything that makes a noticeable difference in MPG - it's the other benefits that are important to me)

I don't think any of these additives increase the Octane level of the Petrol., they may clean the inside of the Engine though and this may help with the problem.

Also If the Engine is burning a lot of Oil that can cause Pinking and may cause the Fault Code.

Archoil claims to "reduce Octane requirement" but, like all these things you have to try, observe any positive effects for you and rely on the blurb...or not.
I don't do petrol so can't comment on that.

can't stand people pretending a real fault code can go away with a bottle of gunk - that's make believe, whats the real fault code - P0130 ?

The O2 sensor produces a voltage based on oxygen content in the exhaust. The voltage varies between .1 and .9 Volts, .1 indicating lean and .9 indicating rich. The ECM constantly monitors this voltage while in closed loop to determine how much fuel to inject. If the ECM determines that the O2 sensor voltage was too low (less than .4 Volts) for too long (for more than 20 seconds (time varies with model)), this code is set. Potential Symptoms

Depending if the problem is intermittent or not, there may be no symptoms other than MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) illumination. If the problem is constant, then symptoms may include one or more of the following:

MIL illumination
Engine runs rough, missing or stumbling
Blows black smoke from tail pipe
Engine dies Poor fuel economy Causes

Usually the cause of P0130 is a bad oxygen (CAT) sensor, however this isn't always the case. If your o2 sensors haven't been replaced and they are old, it's a good bet that the sensor is the problem. But, It could be caused by any of the following:

Water or corrosion in the connector Loose terminals in the connector
Wiring burnt on exhaust components
Open or short in the wiring due to rubbing on engine components
Holes in exhaust allowing unmetered oxygen into exhaust system
Unmetered vacuum leak at the engine
Bad o2 sensor
Bad PCM

Hi Botus, the code brought up is p130d, not p0130.

I don't claim to be any expert, but from what I have read the p130d refers to an engine knock as opposed to a fault relating to the o2 sensor.

Are you suggesting the two codes are linked or shared?

Appreciate your in depth response.
