Firstly hello as this is my first post, a brief introduction. I have owned a few Fiestas over the last 7 years ranging from mk6 tdci, 1.0 ecoboost to my current mk8 ST2. Today I took the plunge on a £1200 2007 ST150 off Facebook (stupid, I know!) easily the cheapest I’ve seen recently and has 12 months MOT, winner I thought….

 

The guy was beyond less than honest and I’ve got a list of things I need to sort in order to get the car to a satisfactory summer daily level. I wanted something older as I want to learn working on a car more than the basics I’ve done over the years and hopefully be able to service some components rather than outright replace.  I have access to a workshop / pit luckily due to work. 
 

context out of the way, the first thing I need to look at is the front o/s suspension. He advertised it has a ‘squeak’ from the front after fitting a brand new shock absorber / strut and spring and simply needed a new top mount (?) but there is a knocking noise coming from offside front when turning the wheel stationary or over bumps etc. I am at a loss wheee to start and wonder if it could be bushes or anti roll bar / ball joint. 
 

Does anyone have any diagrams that would help shed light or even just some advice or knowledge to help me get going? It’s not an area I have really delved into too much in the past.

First step surely is to get a copy of Haynes ?

I would have changed the top mounts/bearings on a car that old if I had the strut/spring out.  If the knock can be provoked just by turning the steering wheel when stationary, get on the deck, and get a friend to move the steering wheel left and right whilst you listening.
