gearbox issues on 2012 Fiesta 4 speed automatic gearbox

Featured Replies

Good evening all. Really hoping someone can help here. Was driving home with the family on the A1M and all of a sudden the car would not go into 4th gear. It revs up high to about 3.5 to 4000RPM before it changes from 1 to 2, same again from 2-3. The gear cog sign came up in amber and information screen said gear service needed, malfunction. took it into the local garage and they said the following fault codes came up. The internal shift solenoid stuck open. They garage could not get the parts to repair it so have asked me to go elsewhere. Does anyone know if this is something that can be replaced by an individual. Car still drives just revs quite high before changing between 1-2-3. Not going into 4 as mentioned earlier. Also, I have the gearbox that is auto but you can move to the right to manually select gears as well. Before this happended the gear numbers used to show up when in this manual mode now they dont. Car still goes into P.N and R and these letters show up.

Any help, advice, garage recommendations would be much appreciated. Wife's a nurse and has to travel for her work thus needs a car, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Thank you

cleaned up the earth points and did a reset of the transmission control module. The gear numbers showed up on manual mode rather than the D that was showing before this. Also noticed that it momentarily went into gear 4 before displaying the D sigh again. Seems to be stuck in gear 3 at the top end, does shift down by it self. Requires revving up to 3.5k rpm before it will shift between 1-2 and 2-3.

Also noticed the MPGS going up to 36.3mpg since doing the TCM reset. Which is quite something as since we bought the car a year and a bit a go it only managed about 29mpgs even on long motorway runs.

It's probably never had the fluid changed and the solenoids have clogged up.

You also have to completely remove the sump from most of these transmissions too, to get the fluid out, as there is no drain plug.

I would suggest taking it to an automatic transmission specialist to get the fluid changed and the solenoids cleaned and tested, replacing any faulty ones after test.

I have booked it in to be checked out with a localish transmission specialist in Ware. Stevens engineering. Seem to have quite a lot of good reviews. A number of trans specialists have come back and said they won't be able to help as their suppliers don't stock the necessary parts. Will update when I hear back. Fingers crossed good news

It could just be that the fluid is very old or even too low, make sure there's no visible signs of leakage

The battery needs attention too

Thank you..battery is newish. Only got in December. Although giving a reading of 12.35v. thought it should be higher. Oil seems pretty clean. You can see the writing on the transmission dipstick. Hopefully they can fix it..wife's a nurse who needs the car to get to patients so this couldn't come at a worse time 😭

Battery is low. Needs an overnight charge.
