Radiator expansion tanks cracking.

Featured Replies

Son has a MK7.5 14 plate Fiesta, he noticed his tank is leaking and got cracks all over it, I've ordered a new one for him which is £25, the bloke in the spares department said there's loads of Fiesta with cracking tanks, being seen on the early MK7 to the last MK7.5.

I suggest anyone who has a MK7 or MK7.5......Then inspect it for cracks & leaks, I'm doing exactly that after typing this.

Checked my plaggy tank, all is fine.

Looked at my son's tank and it was splitting on the middle seam and around the plastic tubes which the hoses fit onto, forgot to take a pic but I've highlighted on this pic where there was cracking, be a right engine failure if that tank gave up big time.

Not a new problem either.  I had a 2002 Mk6 that did this.  Bought it cheap with 'suspected headgasket'.  Just needed a new tank which cost £8 at the time.

I do find it baffling how Ford can keep building cars/engines with exactly the same issues for decades at a time.

Baffling is an understatement when it comes to that rad cap, from new it's assembled dry at the factory, give it a few years and the cap is jammed solid in the tank, caused by the rubber ring, usually untwisting it breaks it into two parts, top spinning on it's own but still won't come out, two options.....Either buy a new tank & cap and replace the lot....or try to carefully break away the top cap, then cut a slot in the inner part, then removing it.....Then fit a new cap.

If Ford had applied some silicone grease to the rubber O ring & threads, all this hassle could have been avoided :iim:

A wise tip for anyone whose Cap is not already stuck.

Thing is not many are aware of this issue so by the time comes to 'top up' the tank it's only then when they find out it's jammed up solid :hammer: Wonder if the same issue carries on with newer Fords, all types, Ford should grease these caps on the service schedule but they don't, took our Fiesta for a service and Ford told me the coolant can't be checked because the cap was stuck, they'd added a advisory bill sheet which was to simply replace the tank & cap & a few pints of antifreeze, the quote was around £200! I ordered a new cap for £12 and carefully drilled & cut away the defective cap.

I think so Ian. I took my one off during my car's first year and it was hard to take off. I greased it with Silicone and have checked it several times since and it now comes off easily.

Ford must know about it because the Anti Freeze concentration is supposed to be checked at Service time, or do they just write a figure in the Service Sheet🤣
