1.0 Ecoboost st gearbox conversion

Featured Replies

Hi there,

My 1.0 Ecoboost is eating gearboxes and I was wondering if it is possible to swap the st180 gearbox into it and what is involved.

I know this is more than likely a driver issue but I would like to be able to drive the car the way I want without having to worry about damaging the gearbox.

cheers,

stewart

The Fiesta MK7/MK7.5 ST180 6-Speed B6 transmission does not fit onto the 1.0 EcoBoost because of the different bell housing. If you want to perform this conversion you need the 6-Speed B6 transmission of a 125 HP or 140 HP Focus MK3/MK3.5 1.0 EcoBoost.

The following parts are required:

* 6-Speed B6 transmission of a 125 HP or 140 HP Focus MK3/MK3.5 1.0 EcoBoost. The shifter mechanism counterweight needs to be modified (either cut or milled).
* Dual mass flywheel of a 125 HP or 140 HP Focus MK3/MK3.5 1.0 EcoBoost.
* Clutch of a 125 HP or 140 HP Focus MK3/MK3.5 1.0 EcoBoost.
* Release bearing of a 125 HP or 140 HP Focus MK3/MK3.5 1.0 EcoBoost.
* Transmission mount of a Fiesta MK7/MK7.5 ST180.
* Driver side driveshaft bearing bracket of a 125 HP or 140 HP Focus MK3/MK3.5 1.0 EcoBoost.
* Shifter cables of a Fiesta MK7/MK7.5 ST180.
* Shifter mechanism of a Fiesta MK7/MK7.5 ST180.
* Passenger side drive shaft of a Fiesta MK7/MK7.5 ST180.
* Custom built driver side driveshaft (or get 1 standard driver side driveshaft and 1 standard passenger side driveshaft of a Fiesta MK7/MK7.5 ST180 and have them cut, welded and balanced).

Apart from modifying the shifter mechanism counterweight and the custom built or modified driver side driveshaft it is a bolt on upgrade.

Most parts however are not particularly cheap which makes this quite an expensive modification. Years ago, Pumaspeed offered an upgrade kit (GBP 1600 for just the kit and another GBP 450 for fitting) but I think it was discontinued.

So in other words it’s more hastle than it’s worth and I will have to keep putting gearboxes into the car until it comes time to sell?

is there any stronger gearboxes that are a simpler swap than the st180 gearbox.

Sounds like a lot of hassle.  Auto is probably more suitable here. :biggrin:

Not a Ford auto😬

Do you know the technical service bulletin?

https://www.tsbsearch.com/Ford/23-2410

The TSB 23-2410 describe, how to repair the gearbox.

To much Grease eats the synchro Rings 🥳

Not Sure, whether all dealer knowing what to do🤭

Sorry. TSB is Ford Fiesta 2017....but 1.0 ecoobost eats a lot of gearboxes 😁

what the hell are you doing to eat gearboxes? Rallying the thing without a clutch?

Having the typical gears 1 and 2 crunching due to the synchro issues. I’ve had to replace the gearbox twice due to the failure new clutch was fitted both times.

To be honest gearbox failure is not uncommon on a Fiesta MK7 1.0 EcoBoost.

The 5-Speed IB5 transmission originated from the 70's. It was originally developed as the 4-Speed BC4 transmission. Around 1982 Ford added a 5th gear to the original design and introduced the BC5 transmission. Around 1995 the BC5 transmission was further developed into the IB5 (Improved B5) transmission which was used until it was finally discontinued at around 2018.

The main problem is that the IB5 transmission was never designed to handle high torque inputs. The high torque input of the 1.0 EcoBoost combined with the increased vibrations of the 3-cylinder engine (the 5-Speed version does not have a dual mass flywheel) causes premature failure of the IB5 transmission.

Premature wear or even failure of the gearbox is well known on especially the 100 HP Focus MK3/MK3.5 1.0 EcoBoost and the 125 HP / 140 HP Fiesta MK7.5 1.0 EcoBoost.

Since it would appear that you either don't know how to use a clutch, or you're possibly trying to flat shift, change the engine and get a sequential 'box.

It'll probably cost a hell of a lot more than your car is worth, but, it'll eliminate the driver error part that's apparently destroying synchro's.

Deleted.

Ad here references another possible alternative - 6 speed box from the later Mk 8 (6MTT215) which is supposedly stronger than the IB5.

We have still seen issues reported with these though. Mine was fine the 5 years I had a Mk 8 140, but mindful of the issues with the IB5 I always treated it gently in 1st/2nd anyway.

Nice to see others trying the 6-speed conversion out. I did mine back in 2019, and it's still going strong; I think it's done about 50k now. The only thing I gave up trying to figure out was the clutch side, but I have a solution in mind after a lot of messing about. I wanted to lose the dual mass flywheel and go back to the solid flywheel and cover plate that the 5-speed used, as that has more than enough holding for the power I am making.
