Timing belt replacement done incorrectly by Ford main dealer

Featured Replies

hi

1.25 2014 Ford Fiesta

i had my cambelt and water pump changed at a Ford main dealer. After returning the car I noticed this humming / whirring noise when revving the engine / turning the car on and off.
it doesn’t appear to make the noise when idling.

returned it to the main dealer and they agreed it doesn’t sound right and now I need to go back on monday to collect it.

ive lost faith in that garage as they gave the car back to me with the coolant totally empty and now this.

after researching online it says it could be due to them over tightening the belt ? If it has been over tightened should I ask them to replace the whole kit again for peace of mind incase it has damaged any of the components ?

video uploaded to YouTube in link above :)

thanks

On these engines the belt tensioner is spring loaded. The tension of the belt fully depends on the tension of the spring.

Over tensioning the belt is virtually impossible unless the actual belt tensioner is faulty (which is highly unlikely).

As far as I know this engine has stretch belt to drive the alternator, power steering pump, water pump and airconditioning compressor. It is more likely that the increased tension of the new stretch belts caused a bearing of the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, airconditioning compressor or guide pulley to fail. This is not uncommon and cannot be totally avoided since you have to deal with old, existing items.

It is actually very easy to check whether the noise is caused by the timing belt/tensioner or by any item driven by an auxiliary (stretch) belt.

Just remove both stretchbelts and start and rev the engine (only for a short period since the waterpump is not driven in this situation). If the sound is still present the problem is caused by the timing belt/tensioner. If not one of the items driven by the auxiliary (stretch) belts will be causing the problem.

I don't think you can over tighten the cam belt - its a 'self-tensioning' thing that sorts itself out to get the right tension?

Have they replaced the tension idler?  It could be the old one's bearings are starting to go and needs to be replaced?

Worn bearings in the alternator or AC unit?  You could remove the alternator belt to see if you can still hear it on reving the car

Yeah I think they replaced the lot as they said it comes all as part of a kit. Was £480 to do so not cheap. But I’ll double check on Monday
