What tyres for 14" rims on MK7 ST-Line fiesta 1.0 ecoboost

Featured Replies

Hey

I'm new to the site and not entirely sure how it all works yet, so I apologise if I've posted incorrectly.

I'm looking for some advice on tyre size.

I've just bought a set of 14" ATS Cup rims for my MK7 fiesta facelift 1.0 ecoboost. The rims are 6J with offset ET48.

I'm wanting to know what tyres would work best that will keep a nice sporty look without scraping or affecting speedo etc etc?

I've been looking at different sizes for 14" rims and people seem to recommend 185/55/r14 or 195/60/r14. I am unsure if these will be ok on fiestas because for fiesta it states 175/65/r14.

Many thanks

Abbie

Hi Abbie - welcome to the forum.

Tyres are confusing things - was the facelift Fiesta sold with 14s? but anyway if there was a spare supplied it was a 14" steel with 175/65/14 as you say.... so this gives you the correct basic wheel+tyre diameter of 590mm plus or minus 10mm or even more

Most people don't choose wheels less than 15", but you've already bought new wheels..... so....

You need to use a website tool such as this - the standard size 175/65/14 is on the LHS, so you now change the tyre sizes in the dropdowns on the RHS, and the aim is to keep the DIAMETER (scroll down) of the wheel+tyre as close to factory as you can... clear as mud?  Have a play with

https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/?wheel1=175-65-14X5.5ET38&wheel2=185-60-14X6ET48&fcl=50mm&wcl=30mm&scl=50mm&sr=0mm

185/60 is a good match (and there's a good choice on sale), and 195/60 is similar (but hardly anybody makes this size).

Then look at a website such as Camskill, to see what tyres are actually made in this sizes.

https://www.camskill.co.uk/m4b0s0p0/Car_Tyres_-_MPV_Tyres_-_People_Carrier_Tyres_-_14_inch

So as a real-world example of actual sizes, I have 205/45/17s on my prefacelift, with no rubbing, and that's a total diameter of 616mm, so there's plenty of room for a range of tyre sizes.

Good luck, and I'm happy to advise on tyre choice once you've done some of the work 🙂

Iirc on the basic Studio model and the Econetic versions of Zetec and Titanium, with 175/65 tyres.

Hey OrangeCurry!

Thank you for the welcome and thank you so much for you detailed response.

My head's been a shed trying to work this out.

No, I have the facelift ST line, the MK7.5 1.0 ecoboost and it came standard on 17's. I just really like the little deep dish rim look and to make things hard for myself 😁 😅

Haha clear as mud, yeah I'd probably say that haha. So are you saying I should measure the total diameter of the standard 17's plus tyres that are currently on it and put the tyre size in that tool and then try to get the RHS total diameter to match that?

Orrrrrr should I use the 14" spare wheel size that online says is the standard 14" size?

Hope what I'm asking there makes sense!

When I've looked at what tyre sizes 14" fans tend to use, 185/55/14, 195/55/14 and 195/60/14 tend to be the faves.

Thank you again for messaging! My head was turning to mush ha.

Scrap all of this. Wheel order cancelled. After being lead to believe that 14"rims would fit my car, after further research I have found that they are not compatible with the brake size on the MK7 St line.

Many thanks for your help though, the tire calculator is super helpful.

Yes - an easy mistake to make, and yes the calculator is very useful.

Just to add - you don't need to actually measure anything on your car - the critical thing with any car is to stay close-ish to factory diameter (which is 590 - 600mm on the Fiesta mk7-7.5) by using the calculator as I described  - changes in width and offset of tyre and wheel are possible, but again use the internet for good to find out what people have actually fitted.

Have fun.

I'm not too sure about that. The 175/65x14 spare has been used on all Mk 7, Mk 7.5 and Mk 8 Fiestas except the ST (not ST-Line). My previous Mk 8 ST-Line had that size spare.

The ST uses a 15" mini spare as on that model  the 14" won't clear the front calipers.

for 14 inch wheels, 175/65 14 was used for the base level Fiesta and the spare wheel for many years. This is from the 2016 brochure.

If your car had 17 inch and your wanting smaller 14 inch, please check, using tyre calculator sites to ensure the outside diameter of each are the same. Your speedo might be wrong if different. This is the difference between my Mk8, 17's and the spare.

To me, notwithstanding whether 14's might clear the brakes, everything points to sticking with one of the OE 17 or 16 inch combinations as above.

...following on from that, if you increase the tyrewall depth on 17s by moving to 205/45 rather than the (prefacelift) factory 205/40, in the real world the 17s are less awful on poor UK road surfaces.

But I am seriously tempted to move to 15s, as getting the bends fixed on the cheap Ford 17s is rather annoying.

I had similar problems with 16" on a Mk 7 Titanium - very common issue at the time. I've come to the conclusion that 45 profile is about the sensible limit with current road conditions, though my main gripe with the 205/40x18s I have now isn't ride, but road noise. They are awfully vulnerable to potholes, etc, though.

One of the nicest "real world" set-ups I've experienced on a Fiesta was the pretty basic 1.25 Mk 7 my wife had. 195/50x15 steelies - not very sexy but a good handling/ride balance with plenty of grip for the available power and always fun to drive.
