When Replace Rear Brakes

Featured Replies

2013 Fiesta Hatch SE 1.6 DOHC. How many miles do rear brake shoes last? At what thickness should they be replaced? Good brand. Ford dealer can not get them.

Depends on how often you use the brakes 🤔

Ford dealer can not (be bothered to) get them.

About 60,000 miles sounds about right on a FWD car.

Unless you regularly do handbrake turns, on our Fusion and Fiesta 02-08, at least 100k.  Just had the Fiesta drums (at 113k) off for a clean and adjust, all OK.  Did them at 70k previously.

Last time I changed rear drum linings was on a 1974 Ford Escort - but they were only shot because the half shaft bearing was very worn!

I wouldn't expect to change drum shoes until the cylinder fails and contaminates them with brake fluid.

However, I did have an issue many years ago where the friction material adhesive failed, the friction material came off the shoe and locked the rear wheel absolutely solid on a blind bend on an unrestricted B road.  Had a horrendous time with recovery not understanding that the car couldn't be towed on a dolly with a locked rear wheel.  Took ages to get a proper truck out, and they damaged the bumper dragging the car on.  In hindsight I wish I'd kept driving it to the next village and just f*cked the tyre completely.  That event was always in my mind every time I used that road afterwards, which was pretty much every day!  Next car I bought absolutely had to have rear disc brakes.

I think I last replaced any back in the 80s!

In over 70 years of driving I've never replaced them.

Probably due by now 😂
