Rear spring noise.

Featured Replies

Our 16 plate ecoboost started making a noise from the offside rear corner. I could make it happen by bouncing that corner with my not inconsiderable weight. I decided it must be the shock absorber but could not feel it when I bounced the corner and touched the shock absorber. Giving one last look around I saw a small mark on the spring where it seemed to have been touching the cup it sits in. I dripped some oil onto the area and the noise disappeared. Is there some reason the spring may have moved or twisted around? If it were rotated by 5 degrees it would not touch this part of the cup.

Have another look, it might have broken further up.

I've had another look and can see no evidence of a broken spring. The car appears to level across the rear end too.

Fiesta springs are very prone to breaking often very close to the top or bottom.

I've decided to replace both rear springs as I've thought for a while that the rear is a bit low.

Why don't you measure the ride height and compare it to the manufacturer's specifications first?

To be honest, I'd rather just slap on a couple of springs. At least I'll then know they are good.

Many thanks for all of the help. Both springs changed, took a little over an hour, cost £90 and I found the O/S spring was indeed broken. I'll keep the good one as a spare. Probably the easiest spring change I've done.

Something that may help others. I watched a YouFace video and he needed an enormous bar to force the suspension down after removing the shocker bolt. Even if I were only changing one spring, I would remove both shocker bolts as it's then simple to just push the suspension down. As you jack the suspension back up you do need to check both springs are seated correctly.

Sorry if I'm teaching the sucking of eggs.

A broken spring? Well fancy that!

I wouldn't bother. If you have to use it it probably won't match a new spring.

Given how simple they are to change, I'd probably stick it on and see how it went. The other spring had broken about 70 or 80mm from the end and nothing looked or felt particularly wrong. When I measured the good old one between the two new one it was the same height. Even the noise only happened after leaving the car standing during a holiday (10 weeks).

Apart from the normal stuff the £90 for the springs is all we've paid on the car so I'm pretty pleased with it.

Thanks again for your help.

I had a 14 plate eco boost and mine used creak like crazy at the rear in the cold when going over bumps. Never had an issues with it in MOTs
