Charging problems

Featured Replies

Hi guys. So I’ve been having problems with my car charging after a complete electrical shutdown. My battery, starter motor and alternator were fried and have now all been replaced. Since being replaced I’ve had no more than a few days before the battery light came on. I’ve taken it back to the garage that fitted the alternator and they’ve told me these faults are coming up and will not clear. Does anybody know if either of these could be or is the reason for the non charging?

The initiating fault sounds serious - why did this happen?
Start button - I don't understand, is it the switch or its wiring?
Active grille shutter we have had that one for 14 years - I ignore.
Battery current sensor will be part of the charging circuit (it's the thingy on the negative lead?) so could well be involved)
Do the "experts" not know, have they measured the current flow and voltages at various conditions as Ford suggest in their diagnostic procedure for your model?

The only way I could see those three components failing simultaneously. Is it the starter motor solenoid stuck, keeping the starter turning but it would unload at engine start. Begin by asking the garage how they did the BCM reset. That might clear one of the faults but you need them to measure the battery drain an hour After switch off.

I did a BCM reset on it and it didn’t clear on the scanner. To this day none of us know why all these components failed at once but they’ve been replaced now. So I’m thinking one of these has been an underlying issue the whole time

This one really needs a very good auto electrician to get to grips with it but I would certainly check the integrity of all  the earth cables.

Two things !!

Firstly, start using FORScan to read the full and correct Ford specific DTC's. Don't use third party generic scanners like Mucar.

Second. Has the BMS sensor in the negative battery lead been replaced ?

If it is the original that was present when you had that much of a fault then it is probably damaged. That is the device that measures the current going in to and out of the battery, and by default controls the alternator charge current.

So chances are I would need to replace that part and all should be well?

No, chances are that you may need to replace that part. Mystic Meg has left the building.

I was shocked to learn that Mystic Meg has actually left the planet 😲

She didn't see that coming.
