Air con or battery issue

Featured Replies

Today my air con has stopped working on my 72 plate Fiesta Titanium x.  It just blows out hot air.  When I do switch it on, it does seem to blow out a couple of seconds of cooler air then nothing.  The condenser looks fine.  When I do have the air con on the stop/start disengages and when I have the air con off by turn on things like heated seats, steering wheel and screens it also disengages. The Ford Pass app has disconnected remote features to preserve battery.  I took it to kwikfit for a battery check and it was classed as a good battery although on the readout it states the charging system has excessive ripple- no load 14.58v and loaded 14.60v.

I haven’t been using my car much over the past 2 weeks and today has been an extremely hot day.  Does this sound like a battery charging issue or something related to the air con?

Thanks

Could the problem be loss of refrigerant, eg leakage past the seals?
Many Kwik Fit operations can also check this I would imagine if you ask them. I find that my admittedly older Focus has to have the refrigerant replaced every other year now.

If this is the case you can usually lower the cost be looking out for offers on the likes of Groupon which can reduce the price to half.

Having looked at other parts of this forum, I’m really convinced it’s to do with the battery not being fully charged.

A battery charge using a smart charger is a quick and easy low cost thing to do. Try that and see if there is any improvement.

When you took it to KwikFit you should have got them to do a recharge. It's not that expensive, and if it doesn't work you get a full refund so you're not even out of pocket.

Twenty millivolts of ripple is nothing to concern anybody. Well within expected limits. At least KF have a decent meter!

This sounds like a job for a decent charger on the face of it. Whether the Aircon will chime back in, I wouldn't like to say but you need to have the battery properly charged before any further clues can be deduced.

I'm wondering why you didn't do that as a first step to either confirm or eliminate the possibility. Or do you not have a suitable charger as yet?

Our 2008 fiesta 1.6 tdci twin cam 80K goes like a rocket aircon stopped working. had advice from here. Took it to KwikFit they checked for leaks and replaced refigerant for £72 while I waited. Excellent job as good as ever it was.
