Gear stick jam

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My gear stick got stuck in first gear today as I came to a stop. I had to turn my car off and then managed to put the gear stick in neutral. When I turned the car back on, I couldn't move the stick into first.

I then turned my car back off and back on again and then it finally moved into first.

Any idea what the problem was? I've never had any issues like this and got a major service in June so not sure what it could be.

These are classic symptoms of the clutch not fully releasing.

It can either be the clutch hydraulic actuation being defective or the clutch itself that developed a defect.

Just for reference, the major service has nothing to do with clutch or gears at all.

Usually I'd recommend replacing the clutch master cylinder as that's cheap and easy to get to.  If the problem is still there, then move onto the slave cylinder & clutch plates inside the gearbox, which are a much bigger job.

Thanks. Do you know if this just happens in first gear or while stationery? Or is there a risk of it jamming while traveling at higher speeds and gears?

It usually starts with 1st gear and/or reverse gear.

It will however become worse until the point the clutch no longer releases at all and shifting becomes impossible while the engine is running.

Also be aware that the clutch not fully releasing will cause excessive wear of the friction plate.

It can also end up breaking the linkage as well.

I had to make a quick decision to rip one of mine out of gear when it was pulling me onto a busy roundabout in 1st with the clutch fully pressed.  But the linkage came off...so still moving but now with a floppy gearstick and no control over the gears at all! 😮

Luckily I thought to switch the engine off to stop it moving any further.  Contacted recovery but they took ages coming out and the car was blocking the entrance to a busy roundabout.  On that day I also learnt how unobservant so many people are on the road...car with a bonnet up in front and they would still just sit behind it rather than try and go around when clear!

Anyway, recovery never came, I cancelled them in the end.  Managed to bodge the linkage back on temporarily, and then drive it home in 3rd gear with no clutch.  All well and good until I got home and attempted to reverse park out of habit.  Linkage came off again in my car park after making it 3 miles home. 🫢

Nightmare!

I have the same issue. Mine started about 2 years ago and I got used to it.

I simply avoid holding the clutch down for to long at a stop or before a stop. When I reverse I must keep pumping the clutch pedal otherwise the clutch loses pressure and I can't get it in neutral without turning off the engine.

Now when I feal that it is about to lose pressure I pump the clutch pedal once of twice before engaging first/reverse so it builds up pressure. For some reason it gets worse during summer.

I went at the dealer and they tried to bleed the clutch using the two man method but that did not fix it as it still got stuck after that. They suggested to change the clutch master cylinder. Another mecanic suggested to keep using it until it fails completely.

I suspect there is a leak somewhere and it's losing pressure. Mine could be around the slave cylinder but I am not sure. You could do a visual inspection on the clutch line where it connects to the master/slave to see if there are any leaks or inside the cabine bellow the clutch pedal or underneath the bell housing.

I linked a post from the forum that is describing the same problem. A member mentioned they fixed the problem after replacing the master cylinder. I hope this helps you. Good luck!
