Mk 7 1.6 Diesel Fiesta Econetic scrubbing front tyre

Featured Replies

Hi all, in this family, we have two Mk 7 1.6 Diesel Fiesta cars.  Both are Econetic and have done more that 100k miles.  A bit noisy but still reliable and have £0 road tax.

Both are severely scrubbing front tyres off and being on the inside, this caught us out!

Here's what we've been done so far:

  • New tyres (not that that will help!)
  • Tracking
  • Check uncompressed spring length

    NAPA NCS1115 vs. Econetic Spec

Attribute NAPA NCS1115 Econetic Spec Match?
Length 335 mm ~336 mm ✔️ Very close
Outer Diameter 137 mm ~133 mm ✔️ Acceptable
Wire Thickness 12 mm ~11.5 mm ✔️ Slightly thicker
Spring Design Inconstant wire coil Constant wire coil ⚠️ Minor difference

I'm thinking a reset of the power steering control module might help.

Have you had this problem and if so, what was your fix for it?

Thanks.

Can't see that springs affect it?
By tracking, do you mean Olde Worlde telescope job or full four wheel alignment and what were the results before and after?
Any history of damage to front wheels that could have put suspension out of alignment?
Any suspension components including top bearing of strut or wheel bearings worn?
How long has this been going on?

Hit an unavoidable brick which I'm sure caused bearing to fail down the line and also extra wear on outside of tyre but not to the extent of yours.

Tyre places says tracking should be checked every few months due to potholes etc - Yeah, right!
Free checks, maybe, but it's always wrong!
However that is the best we've got and they need to be watched with full documentation.

Personally I think you're chasing a problem that doesn't exist.

Apart from the obvious that the inner edge is worn through to the cords, the rest of the tyre is at, or even below the legal minimum. Also showing slight signs of under inflation.

Had the tyres been replaced when they had 1.6mm of tread left, then the inner edge would not have been scrubbed away. With tyres that bad you could lose your licence, or even kill yourself.

Thanks for the other points, will re-check those and try again.

It's the installed coil spring that sets the normal ride height, not the shock absorber.  If a spring is longer or shorter than spec uncompressed, it will change the designed normal ride height of the vehicle.  This will change the camber of the tyre on the road because will change the position of the swinging arm and in doing so, change how the tyre wears.

Thanks.  Good point about the under inflation.

Check the wishbone bushes.  If those are weak, the wheels get pushed 'outwards' when driving forward which scrubs the inner edges.  Won't show up when being tracked on a stationary ramp.
