Any low cost or free solutions to do this or will I have to crack out £200 to have a tuning place do it? And where would I get a base map for 1.6 tdci 8v sohc?

    You might be able to download the original map for your car from the Forscan online servers.  Will need a laptop and wired connection as there's a lot of risk involved in rewriting the PCM.

    The alternative would be find someone with exactly the same engine/gearbox/year car as yours and try their map.  The maps get tweaked regularly throughout production though so there's no guarantee of two being the same even from seeming identical cars.
