M2DC1V Engine replacement

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Hoping for some advice. I am new to Ford having recently bought a C-Max 2017 at an auction. Turned out the engine was broken, with bits of crankshaft, big end bearings and a broken  conrod in the sump. I think I should replace the whole engine but am not sure which engines could be direct replacements. My V5 document shows vehicle variant to be DXA M2DC1V (74w). I have not looked at the head yet but am doubtful it will be of any use as the (broken) piston from the cyl with the broken conrod appears to be lodged up high in the cyl. Your suggestions will be much appreciated.

Hi,

My suggestion would be to put it back in the auction and buy a working one.

The head won't be any good, this engine basically scrap when the wetbelt fails, which is likely what's happened here.

It is the old style engine with two wetbelts.  Unfortunately you cannot fit the later chain driven engine so will have to replace like for like.

74kW is 100bhp.  This engine was available with 100, 125 or 140bhp.  There is some debate around physical engine differences on the 140 version, so if buying used then make sure it's 100 or 125.

The best option is to buy a full brand new crate engine from Pumaspeed.  But I appreciate not everyone's budget will stretch to that.

Thank you so much. I got completely confused as some are advertised by sellers as SNJC, SNJA, M1DA etc. Mindboggling stuff. So the ECU will be OK WITH 100 OR 125BHP. Will any wiring be affected by using a 125 in place of a 100?

SNJC is a 1.25 Sigma engine.  Those are not even the same family as 1.0 EcoBoost.

The ECU will still be running a 100bhp map, so the engine will still be 100bhp even if you use one from a car that was 125bhp.  The wiring shouldn't be affected and you should use as many ancillaries as possible from your old engine to ensure compatibility.

Compared to the 100HP version the 125HP version has different material valves (that are able to withstand higher temperatures) and a different turbocharger.

Compared to the 125 HP version the 125HP version has a different (stronger) head gasket.

These differences apply to the Focus / C-max versions of the 1.0 EcoBoost. The Fiesta may be different.

Pumaspeed currently offers fully reconditioned 1.0 EcoBoost engines for only GBP 1489.90 (in exchange of the old core). This is a real bargain. They also offer a brand new Ford service engine for only GBP 2499.98 which is also a really good price.

These reconditioned engines and new service engines are suitable for all 1.0 EcoBoost versions which means that they have the uprated valves and head gasket.

Thanks. So does it mean I will need a turbo different to what I have if I go with the 125 or will mine still be OK?

If the engine failed due to lack of lubrication (blocked oil pump from failing wetbelts) then both turbo and vacuum pump will likely need to be replaced as well as the engine.

Again, it is the ECU that denotes the power level, so if you buy a 125 engine, it will produce 100bhp when fitted to your car.  There is also ongoing debate around whether the turbo is different between 100 & 125 or not.

Talking with respect to the OP's vehicle, obviously they are not suitable as a replacement for the later revised 1.0 EcoBoost engine.

You are correct. These engines are compatible with all 1st generation 1.0 EcoBoost versions.

My apologies. Do I understand you to be saying the new engines from Pumaspeed are not compatible with my broken one. Would I have any other options if that were the case?

You do have a first generation Ecoboost 1.0 engine, so yes the PumaSpeed engine will fit you car.

Wilco (@JW1982) said "these engines are compatible with all 1st generation 1.0 Ecoboost versions."

The revised engine did not appear until the Mk 4 Focus in 2018 so they will be compatible with your 2017 C-Max.

(Worth noting, however, that from.owners reports on here, some very late C-Maxes did get the revised engine before the C-Max was finally discontinued.)

Incidentally there are other sources of a new engine, eg:

I am going to fork out for Pumaspeed and PRAY. My C-Max was first registered in October 2017, would the revised engine look (visually) different externally to the previous one? Thank you.

The engines do look different.

The main difference is the exhaust ports being on the back of the new engine, but on the front of the old engine.

Another quick spot is the belt cover at the left hand end, it's black plastic on the old engine but shiny aluminum on the new engine.

Your engine code proves yours is the old engine.

Thank you so much. I now have a good idea what I need. I will be back to update how I progress.

I have now placed an online order for a new engine from Pumaspeed. Next will be the turbo and vacuum pump. I checked the turbo and found the 'hot' side seized, just as TomFocus suggested would be the case! Any advice on where to source both without robbing a bank will be much appreciated.

Pumaspeed also offers the turbochargers and vacuum pumps for a good price:

Original fully rebuild turbochargers for GBP 417.00
Aftermarket (manufactured in EU) vacuum pump for GBP 199.00

Compared to other suppliers the prices of Pumaspeed are hard to beat..

As an alternative for a rebuild turbocharger you can have your own turbocharger rebuild at a specialist.

Thanks. Do you know of any rebuilders you'd recommend. I am new to Ford and am trying to learn as much as I can. The car I bought on auction seems decent enough so I will be happy to spend a bit on it and hopefully keep it for two or three years.
