Stuck In 1st Gear

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

So I have a problem with my Fiesta.

It's a 2015 mk7.5 1.0 eco 140ps. 129k miles

It's stuck in 1st gear and will not budge. Even with the engine off it won't come out of 1st.

The clutch still feels normal and still has its biting point so it's still drivable in 1st.

Driving it home when this first happened if I tried to shift from 1st to 2nd it would just grind. Managed to get it home driving very slow.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Sam

Hi,

It sounds like the 1st gear selector fork has broken. Gearbox will need to be stripped down to replace the fork if so.

Might as well replace the clutch while the gearbox is out due to the age & mileage. Though this isn't a clutch fault.

There is a slim chance of it being a cable fault. You can remove the cables at the gearbox end then try to manually push the selector to rule those out. If the selector moves back to neutral without the cables installed then it is a cable fault.

Thanks Tom. I had a feeling it would be the gearbox.

My current one has model number

CA6R-7002-LBC but I've noticed there seems to be a few different ones for the 1.0 eco LBA, LBB, LBC, LBD, LBE, and LBF.

Does it matter which one?

Thanks

They must also ALL start with CA6R too

LBA and LBB no good

C,D,E & F all OK

You need one specifically for the 140ps Fiesta. So as Dave says, none of the others will work.

I expect it will be difficult to find a used one from a 140, hence recommending repair of your own gearbox instead.

*Edit - A quick ebay search has proven that incorrect!😄 I've just checked the parts catalogue. Turns out the 140 used exactly the same gearbox as the 125. No wonder they break so often!

Thanks for confirming that.

I had been looking specifically for a red/black edition one for that reason.

I believe it is, but the140** has lower overall gearing than the 100/125, so presumably the final drive is different.

**whether red/black edition, Zetec S or ST-Line

According to the parts catalogue the whole gearbox is the same for 125 & 140 Fiesta, including the diff/final drive.

That's all I've got to go on though.

The Focus 125 & 140 got the 6 speed gearbox instead.

It is very strange. That's what I thought initially as well. But even looking on Ebay the same gearbox part numbers are showing from both 125 & 140ps models, matching the parts catalogues. The gearboxes come with final drive fitted so they should have different part numbers if they are different.

Sure is. I was having a browse through EBay yesterday also and found the same (not that EBay info is always 100%).

Found this old thread on the subject:

https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/121057-issues-with-gears-1-2-advice-please/

Interesting comment from Wilco @JW1982 - wonder if he could shed any more light if he spots this?

After more web trawling came across this thread from elsewhere:

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1941021.

I suspect the poster who has swapped a 5 speed for a Focus 6 speed could well be a member on here who did the same.

Another thought - if I stick my VIN into, eg, https://fordzona.sk/, it shows, amongst the other spec, the gear ratios and final drive.

Hi, Mine, 2017 1.0 eco140 Black ST-Line 5sp did this at 69k mls. New clutch reservoir fitted, problem sollved.

Just an update to this post.

I was able to get a lowish mileage gearbox from a black edition off eBay which has been fitted with a new clutch kit.

I am no longer stuck in 1st gear.

Just a final update to this post.

After being able to get the magnet out of the gearbox it was covered in what I think is the 1st / 2nd synchro insert.

Maybe someone can confirm this.
