Software updates?

Featured Replies

I have made a point of keeping my 2019 Fiesta as far away from the dealership as I can, since I bought it at 3 years old. It is now seven years old and in good health. Is it possible to find, say from the VIN, if there are any outstanding software updates pending?

I have, like many here updated to Sync 3.4 and run the latest maps I can, (F11 from memory as later ones had a nasty bug in the voice files) but I wondered if there was anything of benefit that I am missing. It would hardly matter if I can't find out as the car is eminently satisfactory in all respects apart from the colour.

Firmware/software update (MFU) can be risky, very risky, if you don't know what you're doing or don't follow the instructions to the letter.

There will probably be a multitude of software updates for your car by now, for a multitude of your modules.

But the question is, do you really need to update them?

The rule of thumb is that you only update a module if there is a performance issue with it that a software update will cure.

A paid license on FORScan "can" update the firmware in your modules and FORScan will tell you what level of software each module is on and what software is availabe.

But, be warned.

Some modules are very dangerous to try to update and can easily be bricked, leaving you with a dead car or dead function.

APIM (Sync3) is one of those, as is IPC (Cluster) and ABS.

Others update a breeze: PCM (Engine), TCM (transmission - if auto)), BCM, ACM (Radio), PAM (Park Aid) and DMs (P & D Door modules)

The vehicle MUST have a fully charged battery

The laptop MUST be connected to a power source and be connect to the internet

The vehicle MUST be connected to a power source or charger to keep voltage at the right level

The drivers for the lead MUST be up to date

The lead MUST be the correct lead, not a cheap ELM327 (especially with a switch)

And the full update files MUST be available and downloaded.

So, don't update for the sake of updating.

For example

On our 2017 Focus the radio would occasionally start up on an untuned AM station, updating the software on the ACM cured this and took about 4 minutes

Updating the Sync3 system (APIM) can also solve the performance and lagging issues but often this bricks the module rendering it useless and it cannot be recovered

A PCM update can be beneficial as it can make the car run better, perform better or use less fuel.

I'll leave it up to you.

FORScan are now discontinuing Software Updates, see the second post in this link.

Thank you. I was actually thinking about manufacturers software updates. I am conversant with FORSCAN to the extent of programming BCMs and installing cameras and cruise controls but would have liked to have been able to find out whether there was any point in subjecting the car to Ford Servicing

The link I posted was about Manufacturers Software Updates with FORScan 2.4, not the normal 2.3 version that 99.9% of people use to install Camaras, Cruise Control etc.

Thank you both for your responses. I may not have framed my question correctly. What I am trying to find out is whether there are software/ firmware updates available that would be applied were I to take my car to a Ford dealership.

I have no intention of using FORSCAN to do this as I have for some years been aware of the potential risks of doing so, hence my initial enquiry.

There is no way to see whether there are updates available for the different modules inside the car. The only way to see this is by connecting/synchronizing the vehicle to the Ford FDRS diagnostic system at the dealership.

On a 6 Year old car it is highly likely that there are numerous software updates available. If the software has never been updated the full update process of all modules can easily take 2 or more hours. Most dealerships will charge the (higher) diagnostic hourly rate.

In my opinion it is a shame that ForScan stops the software update functionality. I have been using this for many Years without a single problem. There a few alternatives but htose are not nearly as good as the ForScan Beta versions.

Thank you Wilco, that's the answer I was looking for.

If you have a dealership service in the UK, they generally don't apply software updates, except for things like emissions or safety.

If you complain about a fault then they are likely to update only the module that the fault is associated with.

There isn't any situation where they would update every module at the same time unless you specifically asked them to do so. But there will almost certainly be many software updates available.

Then I shall stick to the PCM and use FORSCAN as everything else works and if it ain't broke...

No.

Not unless you have:

A: Reported a fault with that function and part of the diagnosis process is to check for and update MFU

Or

B: Specifically booked the car in to have the software updated in that module

They rarely plug in at all

Frankly I don't have the guts to even attempt any software update to the car! I'm working on the old addage 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'

Had there been a global update, I think I would have tried it but as these seem only to be fixes for bugs I have never noticed, I won't be reprogramming anything except for the PCM if Forscan tells me that an update is available. Car is freshly serviced so it is in the optimum condition to learn any update. In four years of use, the only electrical issue was a dud bootlid switch. and over forty thousand miles, I reckon that is very creditable when one considers the amount of kit that went into the Titanium level Mark eights. It really is a 125 HP PC on wheels and although I am reminded of how litte I need when I drive the BX, I wouldn't be without the majority of the electronics. I do not understand why if the car in front turns suddenly out of my path, the crash alarm goes off but It doesn't happen often.
